Re: Dark Ambient

In the dark ambient realm you can't go wrong with gruntsplatter and Scott's other project, the Corvidae Cabal:

Re: The Great Format War

I love tapes but I suspect a lot of that is due to nostalgia as the first music I ever owned was on cassettes. I avoid vinyl purely because my cat broke my turntable many years ago and I never got around to replacing it, and if I do I'll become addicted to buying vinyl and I really don't have the sp...

Re: Noise Artists: What are you doing and what's on your mind RIGHT NOW?

Welp, I've hit yet another creative roadblock. I wanted to try to record a track, but I think I'm overthinking how I want to place microphones. I might also just be getting too bogged-down subconsciously trying to sound like early Whitehouse... I dunno. I've always had problems of not finishing my ...

Re: Pets

adopted a relative's two cats when she left to live abroad like, 7 years ago? anyway they're my babies now. they don't like noise though, so i do most of my listening with headphones. o've heard them described as "the least cat-like cats they've ever seen" by more than a few friends. I ha...

Re: Production Techniques

I pretty much just use my DAW as I would a 4 track back in the day. I layer tracks, adjust levels and eq. That's all.

I've done some dungeon synth using VSTs but to be honest find the process underwhelming.

Samples

A lot of power electronics use samples, particularly vocals. How do people circumvent the legal issues surrounding that?

I assume most people don't get permission so is it just a case of not getting caught?

Re: Genocide Organ

Genocide Organ are a fairly new discovery to me. I knew the name but only just started paying attention.

I can't find much information about them. Apparently they only did one interview in Descent magazine which of course isn't online anywhere.

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

Also, the new 404 seems better suited to dealing with this problems, with an actual screen and better editing capabilities overall. Many other improvements as well. I was watching some videos on this today. It definitely has some significant improvements. I've considered it but I don't use the one ...

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

Coming back to the SP-404, does anyone else have problems with it clicking when playing loops? If so do you have any tips on how to get around it?

Korg MS-20

I know the MS-20 is kind of a standard in this scene. I thought it would be cool to talk about how we use it, what we use it for etc. I have the MS-20 mini and am still getting to grips with it but am having a lot of fun. Right now I'm dialling in sounds from the manual guide and adjusting them to s...

Re: Listening Habits

I swear by the Sony WH-1000XM4. The best headphones I've ever had.

Sometimes I'll play some dark ambient through my monitors whilst working but I much prefer giving all of my attention to an album.

Not sure if it's really unrelated but I haven't seen much talk around Anenzephalia. Ephemeral Dawn is so good.

Re: Advice for a newbie

I've been trying to get into Reaper for editing (moving on from Audacity) so this will be helpful. Thank you! There's a DAW called Waveform (previously Tracktion) that I used for years, and I'm coming back to now that it's available on Linux, and the nice thing is when they roll out a new version, ...

I try to take some time every day to sit down with headphones on and play a whole album at least. Sometimes it's the same album for a few days running.

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

I'd love to hear how people are creating their music. Like, do you record live performances or layer tracks for example? Personally I do about equal amounts of both.

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

I got a lot of my early gear advice from Matt (MiseryEngine) and have spent a lot of time working with the Novation Bass Station II and Roland SP-404A over the past year. More recently I've been using a Korg MS-20 mini and literally, as in a couple of hours ago, just got a Korg SQ-1 to go with it.

Hi, I'm Steve. I'm currently working on some death industrial/power electronics stuff which will hopefully see the light of day later this year.
