Re: Generational differences in the noise community

Completely agree with the sentiment about it being easier than ever to make noise, but that doesn't exactly translate to acceptance from the noise scene, which is what I'm trying to get at. Like should easily made digital noise that gets uploaded to bandcamp and spammed on instagram become the norm...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

I want to touch on a couple of things in response - - the future of noise will be shaped by those who are doing it; like any scene, the older you get, the more likely you are to drop out of it; priorities change, life intrudes, the balance of how much energy you have or want to expend on it can dimi...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I suppose I'm taking specific aim here at when tv or films attempt - and are sometimes celebrated for - an elevated sense of observation or accuracy in setting the scene you're talking about. Things where professionals from that field will be consultants and so on. It's such a low bar, because it's...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I've worked in a few kitchens and I really don't enjoy any film or TV that tries to dramatise what that environment is like. It just looks so artificial to me, even when it's well observed. I think that flows through almost any industry - my wife is a massage therapist, and if we ever see a scene w...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I also wish the TCM Underground lady had her show a little earlier---I am no night owl! This is where a DVR comes in really handy - set it to record and catch it the next day! I watch almost nothing in "real time". Even stuff like the news or sporting events, I'll record it and start 15-3...

Titicut Follies - 1967 - fly-on-the-wall documentary about a hospital for the criminally insane in Massachussets. Hard to watch, but necessary. Someone else watching TCM? haha I caught this one too, and I think it was very interesting. That doctor smoking while inserting a feeding tube is some of t...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

December highlights: The Thin Man - 1934 - I think I watched this three times this year, as it's one of those movies that I can't stop watching if I come across it. The vibe between William Powell and Myrna Loy makes the mystery secondary, always. On The Beach - 1959 - It's hard for me to think of a...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

on a similar vibe, Just Before Dawn from 1981 is worth a watch. Standard "five college kids go for a camping trip in the backwoods, hilarity ensues" horror movie, but it's early enough that not everything feels by-the-numbers, and it maintains a solid creeper vibe throughout.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (John D. Hancock, 1971) One of my favorite horror movies since I was a kid, and the local ABC channel would run it as an afternoon movie a couple of times a year, either during a horror theme week or the week of Halloween. The older I get, the more I understood it, the ...

4. Keep the show moving; don't space sets out by a half hour like a punk show. Have everyone set up and swap out with 5-10 minutes between artists. This prevents attrition and if the show is going to get cut early, lets you pack in as much as possible. THIS ALL DAMN DAY. The only reason for that mu...

Re: Struggles Of Making Noise/ Hosting DIY Noise Shows

as far as producing noise, some of the same things apply, but personally I've never had to crank anything so loud that my neighbors would hear to get the result I wanted. I do live in a detached house in the city, so my neighbors are close but not sharing walls; your mileage may vary.

things that have helped me in the past, for any kind of show where there will be impact to neighbors: 1. let them know in advance 2. do what you can to minimize impact. For #1, talk to them and let them know - there's going to be a thing ("some people over", "a party", etc if you...
