Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

rewatched "Testament" for the first time in nearly 40 years, streaming now on Criterion as part of their postapocalyptic sci-fi collection. Still one of the bleakest, crushing films I've ever seen. A mother in suburban California tries to take care of her family in the aftermath of a nucle...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

Dead of Night is one of those movies that I always forget the name---but never the movie itself. I remember being totally mezmerized with the looping structure when I first saw it some years ago... and the evil doll too, of course! It had to be awesome to see it in a theater! Different " Dead ...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

a friend and I went to see The Vanishing last night - such a quiet movie for something so consistently tense. The original one? I just watched it for the first time a few months ago---fantastic. Correct. I saw it for the first time about a year ago, and he had heard of it but had never seen it. A c...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

After knowing of it for years, just saw Hell In The Pacific (Boorman, 1968) for the first time (on a beautiful 16mm print at a backyard screening). WWII, Lee Marvin as a downed American pilot and Toshiro Mifune as a Japanese Navy captain, both stranded on the same small Pacific island. Full of tensi...

Re: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Trades, etc.

Brubaker's been mentioned: my favorite of his is the "Criminal" noir series. Highly recommended. I also strongly recommend Moore's Swamp Thing run and the first Hellblazer series. More recent, "Scalped" is great. "100 Bullets" as well. Just reread Moore's run on Swamp ...

The Magnificent Seven (Sturges, 1960) This is one of my favorite movies. I'd love to watch it back to back with Seven Samurai but haven't found anybody willing to commit to that double feature yet... Just did that a few weeks ago, rewatched Seven Samurai and had to throw on Magnificent Seven right ...

a pivoting lever that would allow a needle to rise up and scratch across the device or retract it to hit the mini cymbal. The hardest part is not having the vocabulary for the parts I need (knowing what they are called). I've spent more time searching online using different terms for what I'm looki...

Re: Dream gear and future innovations

we built a device that we call the wheel, it's a motor and flywheel from an old classroom turntable, mounted on wood with an inline power switch. Attached to the board is a piece of copper wire (12 or 14 gauge) with a contact mic at the end, with a piece of guitar string soldered to it like a finger...

Re: Dream gear and future innovations

one thing I've done a few times is cut a piece of 1/2" plywood to fit inside a case, cover it with the carpet that automotive shops sell to the guys pimping out their car stereo systems, add a couple of simple handles to either end. Then use velcro on the base of pedals, mixers, noise gens, wha...

Re: Dream gear and future innovations

right now I'd love a reasonably-priced midi controller with 64 or more knobs. being able to build virtual mixers with a ton of aux sends & busses is great, but being able to map them to physical knobs would make them so much easier to play in real time.

Re: Packaging and Playability

I'll always remember browsing the Relapse catalog back in the 90's and seeing the listing for some cassette or maybe double cassette that was encased in a huge block of concrete, so you had to break open the concrete if you wanted to play it (and also pay for shipping a giant block of concrete!)

Just got an email yesterday asking Juhyo to play one of four dates this summer that are booked for Tourniquet (and hopefully more if these go well). Feels like there's some fresh folks coming in to add some energy to the scene, I'm stoked for it.

one tangent that this made me think of - watching Custodian sets, I always felt a distinct pulse that felt controlled and intentional in a way that set it apart for me from most other cut-up harsh noise I hear, and I think it comes from the fact that Jon / Custodian is an amazingly accomplished drum...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

Completely agree with the sentiment about it being easier than ever to make noise, but that doesn't exactly translate to acceptance from the noise scene, which is what I'm trying to get at. Like should easily made digital noise that gets uploaded to bandcamp and spammed on instagram become the norm...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

I want to touch on a couple of things in response - - the future of noise will be shaped by those who are doing it; like any scene, the older you get, the more likely you are to drop out of it; priorities change, life intrudes, the balance of how much energy you have or want to expend on it can dimi...

I suppose I'm taking specific aim here at when tv or films attempt - and are sometimes celebrated for - an elevated sense of observation or accuracy in setting the scene you're talking about. Things where professionals from that field will be consultants and so on. It's such a low bar, because it's...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I've worked in a few kitchens and I really don't enjoy any film or TV that tries to dramatise what that environment is like. It just looks so artificial to me, even when it's well observed. I think that flows through almost any industry - my wife is a massage therapist, and if we ever see a scene w...
