Re: Now Playing

I listened to two Seamus Williams (of TVE)-related CDs this morning, both of which make use of something I’ve been thinking about: being outwardly boring, or at least deliberately not being exciting. While this isn’t typically associated with “good” (read: entertaining) music, I’m not sure that it s...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I rewatched The Ipcress File last night. Really good movie, Michael Caine is great in it as an insolent English spy, and the day-to-day, almost mundane details and grey look of everything are balanced beautifully with really crazy cinematography and very funny script. Plus there’s some fun tape mani...

The other obvious person here, I think, is Antonin Artaud, who did a bunch of bizarre sound poetry. I have a bunch of audio files of it, so if you (or anyone else) wants them, let me know! Would love to hear these! They are probably online somewhere, but I can send you the files. PM me an email! Do...

Re: Francisco López - Conveyer Belts [USA] (self-released, Bandcamp)

Crucial Listening podcast is unknown to me. At a cursory glance it seems to come from a broader experimental angle. Lots of unfamiliar names (but familiar ones, too: Lasse Marhaug, Daniel Menche, Pharmakon (discussing Whitehouse's Bird Seed, no less), Charmaine Lee, Victoria Shen). Will have to do ...

Francisco López - Conveyer Belts [USA] (self-released, Bandcamp)

This release came to my attention via a recent episode of Jack Chuter’s (Guesswork, Hard Return) wonderful podcast, Crucial Listening, on which he interviewed López. The tracks on the album are all unedited (except shortening, presumably, and mastering) recordings taken from inside checked baggage a...

Lettera 22 - Salvado (Usagi) The Haters - Tractor 2023 (Helicopter/Troniks) These CDs are both excellent. The Lettera 22 one is in the musique concrete/tape music zone, expertly done and with a really interesting, well-matched mix of sounds across the single track. The Haters CD is more in the noise...

Re: Releases of note, 2024

However I admire the foot it has in a TNB school of properly non-musical, non-entertainment sound. Seconded, the Mogao tape is really good. A friend and I were listening to it recently and he compared it to Spring of Life in how it’s put together, if not in its sound. It was a great call. Do you me...

TVE - Diseased Fancy (Podunk) Weighty, excellent tape music, as tends to be the case from this project. This one is very physical sounding, and has an interesting mix of fidelities/material on it. North Shield - Seine and Frozen Red (Buried in Slag and Debris) Beautiful, calm and calming new age-y d...

Agree very much with many of the releases mentioned above. Particularly the Star 2CD, Red Wine and Sugar CDr and Natalia Baylis tape are all standouts. Some others: Thomas DeAngelo - Voiceprints & Aircuts: Sound Poetry by Other Means (Adhuman) pnl(a) - Fashion Skull (Absurd Exposition) Ezio Pier...

Lapse - Powerline (Small Mercies) One of the best purely harsh noise releases I’ve heard of the last few years. It’s absolutely merciless - fantastic. Glass/Constance/Nyoukis/Nimmo - Calibre One (Chocolate Monk) I guess this would be a compilation? Each of the first three artists have one track, wit...

Ezia Piermattei - Rosume (Joy De Vivre) Really varied, interesting, and sparse sound collages on this tape, with contents ranging from strange vocal and field recordings to fragments of music. The way it’s all put together keeps you guessing and is very affecting. It’s hard to put words to, but is e...

I watched Bell, Book and Candle the other night. It came out the same year as Vertigo, and also features Kim Novak enchanting Jimmy Stewart. Jack Lemmon is in it, who’s great as well. Fun one!

The new Knurl / Artbreakhotel split 2CS, Scrap Metal Labyrinth, on Buried in Slag and Debris is really excellent. Four sides of varied, interesting metal sounds from two of the best at it. Plus the packaging is particularly beautiful!

I’m a big fan of Publication Ban. The tape “Coerced Migration” is one of my favourites. There’s essentially no information out there about who might be behind it, etc. so I imagine it qualifies?

I watched Horror Express (1972) last night, which was a ton of fun. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee are always great, but this one is particularly good. It’s a Spanish/UK production, and is like Carpenter’s The Thing if it took place on the Trans-Siberian railroad, a la Murder on the Orient Expres...

Re: Synth Sounds: Old and New

what you get is a LOT of "lowest note taped down and filter sweep" kinds of songs. Very little composition attitude or stretching the capabilities of a synth beyond the initial dopamine reaction of sub-bass drones. Hobbyist constraints. This is it here. “I want to make music that sounds l...

Synth Sounds: Old and New

Why is it that synth sounds used in a lot of the 80s/90s stuff seem so much better than those used in newer music? To my ears they do anyway, and I imagine others find the same thing. This topic was inspired by listening to the compilation of A.B.O. material on Usagi, Documentation ‘89-‘93 . I found...

Umpio - Sin Memoria CD (Absurd Exposition)

this is such a good album. I’ve returned to it several times already, and listened to it twice this morning. Super inventive and detailed, but maintaining a lightheartedness and sense of fun throughout.
