Re: Hospital/NWN Fest in Osaka
I honestly expect to stay in my hotel much of the time in Osaka. I don't travel very much. This is going to be the first time I've even left North America. I will surely need a day or two to decompress in a quiet room! . This won’t be the first time I left the continent, but it will be the first ti...

Re: Listening (to) space: Mono vs stereo
I’m with Bubble and Bob in that I prefer stereo. Most of my favourite noise recordings utilize the stereo field and pan or split audio into different channels. For me, it’s more interesting to listen to music recorded in stereo as it has more depth, more excitement, more activity, etc. I’m working o...

Secret Abuse - Violent Narcissus, Not Not Fun 2008
Secret Abuse - Ripeness, Callow God 2009
Moody, over-driven and saturated guitar and electronics noise. The Secret Abuse discography is all desert island material for me.

Mot & Violent Shogun - Mangle (AE) Excellent collaboration between these two tape manglers. I love the packaging which includes an unplayable, gold paint slathered tape. One of my favourites of 2022. Midden - Nothing New Under The Sun (Bent Window) Gorgeous tape of not quite ambient quiet music....

Re: Happy Noise?
Proper music can be happy. I mean certain melodies or chord combinations elicit happiness/joy or even sadness/malaise/melancholy, but noise inherently doesn’t stimulate those emotions in the same way as traditional music, at least I don’t think it does. I’m not saying that you can’t be happy and mak...

Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels
. I'm just reminded that we should see underground support not as just another expense with the same expectations and conditions as all our other daily expenses, that it has an intrinsically elevated value that is intangible. The digital subscription format is a somewhat modern extreme that puts th...

Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels
. Why do people inherently balk at the idea of giving an artist they like and probably know $5 per month to support their work, but at the same time will unquestioningly give a large business ran by strangers well over $5 per day for impermanent treats, like a cup of coffee, booze, fancy food, etc....

Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels
I once subscribed to a few of these, Deathbed Tapes, Straight Panic, Kevin Drumm, and although they aren’t expensive subs, $5/mth here and there adds up. I just don’t devote as much attention to digital releases as I do physical. There is still something special to me about obtaining a physical thin...

Re: substance abuse/usage in noise
I really missed the boat on the noise = poppers connection, but it's something I've heard about multiple times before. What is the origin of this... I don't know what else to call it except a "meme"? Completely confused by this. No stranger to poppers for reasons completely unrelated to n...

Re: Prurient thread
Haven't seen a lot of love for Rainbow Mirror in this thread and I'm curious why that is? I bought the 7xLP boxset when it was released and enjoyed the experience of just grabbing a random LP from the box and spending time with different parts of the album instead of listening sequentially. One of ...

…with OM the grain is more coarse and slightly less sanded down. More bolts and nails poling out, so to speak, but the pace and method is the same. I’m happy you brought up Ordinary Machinery! It’s another great project that stands on its own. I really like the way you described Ordinary Machinery ...

I don't know much controversy with him - and maybe I don't want to know haha. But I wish he was still making sounds for us. The alleged “controversy” is a mystery to me, too. Truth is, I don’t know and I don’t care. Just listened to “Accepting Irreparable Mechanics” on his Three Songs Of Lenin impr...

Amazing discography. “Mulberries Ripen And Rot”, “To The Hills Of Altadena”, and “The Approach” are my favourites, but they’re all insanely good.

Knurl - Initial Shock, CD/DVD reissue on Absurd Exposition Reissue of Knurl’s debut tape. I was super bummed about missing Knurl in Ottawa on April 21st, and the video of the set posted to Instagram just didn’t satiate me. So, I threw this scorcher on and set the volume as high as I could without wa...

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD
This thread has been super interesting to read. I’m always looking forward to reading new contributions. For Death Glaze, I currently use source sounds recorded to a Zoom H6. Source is edited and then recorded to tape, and that taped source is processed with different effects chains but they almost ...

Re: Pathways to Noise / Place and Time
At a fairly early age, like grades 6-8, I was into Canadian indie music, particularly stuff happening on Canada’s east coast, especially Eric’s Trip and related Elevator To Hell, but also bands from Toronto associated with the label Squirtgun Records, and Hamilton’s Sonic Unyon label. I really got i...

The other day, I was leaving my house to drive to work, Blind Date’s “Thank You” CD in hand, and I somehow managed to close the house door on it. The clear plastic tray is completely messed up, and one corner of the digipak is properly mangled. I’m generally very careful with stuff in my collection,...

Re: Pathways to Noise / Place and Time
I wonder if there are any 2nd generation noise artists who like heard Merzbow for the first time as a toddler. I doubt it. I’ve tried to get my kids into noise, but I gave up when it became obvious they couldn’t care less. As toddlers, they’ll happily fart around with my gear, but once they’re in s...

Hi everyone. I’m Thomas. I’m 39 and I live in Hamilton, ON, Canada. I do noise as Death Glaze, and ambient stuff as Dreʌms Cvlt. I’ve been lurking around here for a bit, and thought that it was high time I finally participate.
