Re: Best of Macronympha

Lots of great releases listed by the previous posters. Every one of these is worth a listen. Any fans of "Notes from Underground" on Self Abuse? I love how buried and almost "thin" that one sounds in sections compared to some of the other Macro releases from that era. It might no...

Re: Online music platforms (Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Spotify, Apple)

I use Tidal since I’m in my car a lot for work and haven’t replaced my laptop since it died two years ago. I also enjoy “lossless” playback and the idea that they pay artists a lot better than Spotify. I think it’s like an extra $5 per month? I got one o’ them there chromcast things that attaches t...

Re: JUNK METAL ABUSE

A certain other Finnish project, whose name is an anagram for Arri Barre Puzo , do so masterfully imo. Is that still a big part of his work? …. Yeah, I think so. Their 2019-2020 releases do have some electronics, but continue to rely heavily on junk metal. One of my BU favorites is "Charnel He...

Graustich - Morality Ends One of the best contemporary PE releases imo. Tracks feel cold and calculated while still hitting quite hard, honing an approach that is totally its own and not in line with anything currently going on rn. Really into the 7" done for Total Black as well, still need to...

Deaf Forever All Dayer, Leeds (2007/8?): Traveling to London to get a train ticket for Leeds in order to attend an all dayer. Being sent back the way I came via Birmingham because there was a train on the track adding another 2 hrs to the journey. Finally getting to Leeds and paying for a room to s...

that split is great. came across this while browsing bandcamp and it's great too, very strong internal rot vibes: https://deliriantnerve.bandcamp.com/album/uncontrollable-ascension This crew played a fantastic gig with Skourge last week at Rhizome DC after Brain Tourniquet had to drop. Re: Dislikes and turnoffs

Prioritizing gear over sound/vision drives me nuts. I recently saw a gig photo that looked like the contents of a Guitar Center exploded onto a table. Do you really need to lug that much stuff for a 10 minute set?

Only just this morning I discovered Arthur Rhames. Fuck John McLaughlin forever after hearing this Brilliant stuff. I'm so pleased to hear that folks are listening to Rhames. I first heard his work as part of The Dynamic Duo with Rashied Ali, then later found out about his guitar work. He passed aw...

Scalp Elevator - Ontario (Total Black)

This one has lots of clattering junk metal and bass rumble with solid moments of atmospheric tension release mixed in. There's a great ebb and flow of different sounds at work here while still being very "live" and uncompromising.

Insanely melted '93 Dead show with Ornette Coleman: https://youtu.be/VRAlUJPv9io Oh yeah, this is the show that really made me take the Dead seriously. It's a wild one. The Pacific Northwest '73-'74 set has been getting a fair bit of play at my place recently. But I've also been digging back into s...

Re: Jazz/subgenres

I saw Joe McPhee at an outdoor gig at Rhizome DC in November. He was in fine form with Michael Bisio and Joe Giardullo playing in the trio. McPhee remains an absolutely explosive improviser, and he's only gotten more creative as the years have gone by. You're missing out if you haven't heard Nation ...

I'll be catching P.L.F. live in April. One thing that's abundantly clear when listening to them is the importance of thrash metal to their sound.

I've been listening to a fair bit of Splintered recently. The heavy riff and drum repetition leans psychedelic, but in a super bad trip/hallucinatory Brainbombs way.

Commuter - Inner SE Industrial (Phage) The atmosphere on this one is quite strong. The noise itself has a slightly reverberant quality that instantly brings to mind sounds echoing through alleyways and under bridges. Where this disc really shines is in the adept patchwork of field recordings and ele...

Not exactly under hyped, but I always thought 666 Volt Battery Noise deserved more shine. Really dense, hard-hitting harsh noise. RIP. I'll echo that Umpio is another artist whose approach is incredibly inventive and deserves heaps of praise. His work is hard to pigeonhole, but I think that makes an...
