Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels

Such a huge part of what I love about noise is the physical releases. I've on and off been a subscriber to both WCN and Noisextra, but digital content just doesn't give me enough to support the creators continually. Same goes for digital only releases, just not into it enough to pay for it. I want t...

Re: A Post-Discogs Future

I hope that buyer habits change and in person sales escalate, but I already have lots of people who are local, and somehow prefer to pay the fees, AND shipping on an item that they could just grab in person easily. Maybe now that i’m moving to a more easily accessible location this will change, but...

Yeah, Facebook groups and Instagram, I guess discord maybe altho I don't use it. Haven't bought anything from discogs in ages, I get all of my stuff locally or from closed social media groups

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

Imagery matters a lot to me as well. I've heard the whole "only the sounds should matter" thing across genres, ad infinitum. I disagree. I want imagery. It could be something I really like, or it could be that I hate it and need to reconcile it with the sounds (or vice versa). As someone ...

Re: Time signatures in noise

Interesting topic. I think just about ten years ago, maybe from 2012-2019, there was a lot of noise, industrial, adjacent genre-stuff that was widely distributed and good visibility that coincided with an explosion of gear being made more available at a somewhat decent price. Elektron samplers, seq...

Re: Domestic Noise

I am surprised I have not read anyone mention Ashley C's Drift album on Freak Animal. It is a remarkably low-key album, almost pitch-black, cold, flowing, almost floating noise release. If you want to turn your evening living room into barren dead-zone, turn this album on. I have always thought tha...

Re: Looking for a noise podcast that talks process and gear

If you pay a few bucks per month on Patreon, you can get access to Noisextra Trashware, special episodes that revolve around gear and noise making techniques only. There's dozens in the archive at this point and a new one out every two weeks. Well worth the insignificant amount of money they ask for...

Re: Time signatures in noise

It wasn't. I didn't see any samplers/sequencers but I'm really new to modular/eurorack, so I might have missed something. In his defense, I don't think he was referring to a literal clock that was determining the time signature/rhythm, but rather a "feeling" and seeing "movements&quo...

Re: Time signatures in noise

I mean time signatures are dependent on context I like this sentiment! I think that's partially what I was suggesting when I said it's cultural. We impose a time signature onto what we listen to and what we listen to imposes its time signature on us. I also realize I am opening up a can of worms wh...

Re: Time signatures in noise

how did your friend come to this conclusion? I mean time signatures are dependent on context. You can count a birdsong or an engine running and come up with a time signature for it, but it doesn't mean that it's actually in any specific time signature, it's just that your brain found a rhythm. we hu...

Re: Listening Environment

Prefer headphones simply because I rarely get the chance to blast noise from my stereo as loud as I'd want, so headphones are the best way to achieve the optimal volume level. I do have Genelecs tho, and blasting harsh noise loud from them is a totally different experience.

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

I think each format has its strenghts and weaknesses which both the artist and label should consider when deciding what format to use. Tapes have a distinct sonic quality, they slowly degrade over time but in an appealing way that fits noise very well (as opposed to CD-R's that just stop working). S...

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

Gimp has gotten better over the years. Yeah for sure, I use it at work and it's honestly very usable and a good tool, especially for being completely free. With GIMP available I wouldn't pay for an image editing software unless I was a serious professional, and I was in the industry for many years ...

Re: Pathways to Noise / Place and Time

Grunge & Alt. rock in the 90s, then indie and noise rock and hardcore / different punk subgenres and finallyy sludge via EHG with small detours into hip hop and electronic music, all of which led me to search for more intense and obscure stuff which led me to japanoise & industrial in the ea...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

the investment to get into noise is simultaneously smaller and bigger then it was previously, which is to say that you can of course do all the online things with forums and social media and free programs like vcv rack but also that the classic noise pedals such as the jason lamb dod ones are getti...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

Was there noise content online during the BBS era, pre-HTML? Not really pre-internet though, since I doubt Joie was surfing the ARPANET in the 60s or 70s. That's actually something I haven't seen addressed much, evolution of noise scene online. I mean Greh talked about the I<3Noise boards and such o...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

Great point about the mystique, because that is such a huge part of the allure. Although I feel like it does still have a mystique, albeit it a different kind. Like stories and shit from guests on WCN add all of this lore and what feels like deep insider knowledge despite the fact that WCN is super...

Just musing really. I don't disagree about the requirement of knowledge being important, it's absolutely part of what makes it rewarding. I'm just bummed that I don't see more people my age or younger being active in circles like these, you know? I wouldn't have spent half of my saturday trying to ...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

We're kind of past the time when underground culture was a young persons game and constantly evolving into something new. The last underground movement that was truly modernist was post-punk, after that it's all been kind of regressive and derivative, even if electronic music has had some flashes of...

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

Don't be afraid to make CDr's. The format is a lot more resilient than it's given credit for being when managed correctly. Also, in terms of presentation, the medium is only as cheap and disposable as you treat it to be. Oh man, couldn't disagree more. I just think it's the worst format for music a...

Re: labels accepting demos?

Also a great way to get started is to make that demo a tape, like 10-20 copies maybe and then send them around, maybe ask for trades. If it's good, people will be interested and will make it a lot easier for you to have your next tape get released by a label. Or a 2nd pressing, even. Getting release...
