Music and Noise
A debate that has long seduced, embroiled, fascinated, plagued, and complicated conversations around noise is - and this can be rephrased to infinity - "is noise music?" My answer, yes. Others could answer - no, it is not. The answer doesn't matter much to me, but one thing should be clear...
Re: Books
Just finished "Apple in the Dark" by Clarice Lispector. Final new translation in a 15 year project led by, at least mostly, and finished by Benjamin Moser.
Incredible. My favorite novelist alongside Nabokov, which I believe I have already referenced here.

Re: Dislikes and turnoffs
Personally speaking, I think the automation and CV control flexibility of modular gear makes cut-up noise have a lot more avenues of possibility. Shout out to Parasite Nurse, whose work I checked out recently from the WCN podcast and what she is doing is cool. However, you can go other directions th...

Re: Now Playing
Just purchased Gymnasieåren by Andre. Really great, and the first time in a long time that a very young artist (18 years old) has impressed me with something emotionally evocative and with sonic attitude that is particular to a region/philosophy (hint: Gothenburg). I love Discreet Records! I wish ...

Re: Modular Noise
After two years of expanding my modular, I will say I would be hard pressed to ever go back to not having a personally curated and designed modular system. Plus, I have a Prophet 08, so I don't feel the need to really chase other synths after 13+ of trying, buying, selling, and buying synth after sy...

Re: Synth Sounds: Old and New
a lot of people in noise/industrial right now don't really understand synth architecture or how to "play" their synths. ^ Me for the last 6 years trying to figure out my MS-20 (and wishing those Behringer Roland Juno clones had been around because all I want to do is make John Carpenter t...

Re: Releases of note (so far) for 2023
I haven't done "Best of the Year" lists in like 13 years or so, but the best noise/experimental album I heard this year was the contemporary Italian tape/electo-accoustic compilation "Tutto A Posto Niente In Ordine" on Nashazphone. Absolutely stunning example of forward-thinking ...

Re: Synth Sounds: Old and New
I think that - perhaps - a new frontier in noise/industrial/power electronics synth playing and programming is finding ways to dig into music theory (in conjunction with some of the more advanced/academic techniques found in Xenakis, Parmegiani, Ferreyra) and make some wild new takes on the establis...

Re: Synth Sounds: Old and New
what you get is a LOT of "lowest note taped down and filter sweep" kinds of songs. Very little composition attitude or stretching the capabilities of a synth beyond the initial dopamine reaction of sub-bass drones. Hobbyist constraints. This is it here. “I want to make music that sounds l...

Re: Synth Sounds: Old and New
Weird quandary you are facing here, but interesting... I think from a very basic high level take on this, your impression is solely in your own head here. We are dealing with a level of subjectivity directly connected to taste. I personally think those Club Moral synths are just....I just think of t...

Re: COIL
Are their other releases also bad quality? I have been eyeing those Burroughs' cds for a while. Honestly, I am only interested in Coil related stuff they have released and don't own anything else physical they've done for them (just downloaded them). The rest of the Dais label is unbelievably borin...

Re: True Crime Electronics (Slogun, Deathpile, Fistfuck etc.)
I think Deathpile - GR is literally one of the worst sounding albums and, by extension, worst sounding music (or noise for that matter) of all time. I totally understand how it is foundational - for a sound that I mostly find silly and hobbyist - but man is that material....boring. I think his other...

What is the deal with reissues on, say, Dais Records? The vinyl pressing for "Music to Play in the Dark Vol. 1" is horrible quality, fyi. My copy skips so regularly. I remember when they announced this, they had like 782839827481931 color variations so I bet they just flooded the plant wi...

Re: Scrap metal percussion
I think that a good recommendation here would be Burning (FKA Prostate). Our trusted noise media head honcho Oskar from WCN/Wince played in this group! Thank you so much! I'll be sure to check this project out. Any cool release by them you recommend? Cheers! Silver After Death is great, but many ye...

Re: Punk/Hardcore
How many folks here are into the noisier side of punk like crasher crust? Thinking Japanese bands like Gloom, Zyanose, Deceiving Society, or American bands like Atrocious Madness, Zatsuon, etc. For years it was an obsession of mine and I feel made me more open to noise music. I am mostly a fan! I d...

Re: COIL
I recently bought The Ape of Naples on vinyl after years of listening to it on MP3 and YouTube. Total operatic, circus progressive madness. Genius send off to the group, in earnest. Subsequent music from Coil has come out since then, but I view this as a weird "end" of sorts for the group....

Re: Punk/Hardcore
I just got the Pyhäkoulu 2LP in the mail. This thing is fucking amazing. Somewhere firmly rooted in hardcore, but with almost gothic tinges but without going post-punk. Very weird, and hard to explain vibe. Thanks for all the tips on Finnish stuff. Seemingly a fertile ground. Wonder what the runoff ...

Re: Off-Shoots of Macronympha
The solo Rodger stuff is mostly fucking awesome. Some of it gets eaten up by its own logic, and this is most obvious in his live sets. Those rare(r) box sets he did a decade or so ago are cool. The collab tape with Puce Mary, which is a live show?, that is cool too. There's a 45 minute live set in ...

I am familiar with only a fraction of his works but I'd call myself a fan. Of course Pan(a)Sonic was/is great but he released several excellent solo albums as well. Kilo (2013) is the one I am most familiar with. Pleasant industrial percussion and rhythms mixed with material ranging from dark ambie...
