Re: Noise Boxes
I bought a cheap Chinese violin off ebay for noise research purposes did you modify it, and then add a Moog to the mix? I bet that turns a noise track into a component of an industrial track relatively quickly. or in this case an ominous pop track perhaps? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIjLkpwAjzc

I'm doing cassette stuff tonight. I had forgotten they had "protection tabs" on them. for a moment I was like "why won't this record!?!". and then I broke out the scotch tape. every day is a new adventure, or maybe an old one where you forgot the details of the lay of the land. h...

or home made instruments or whatever people like to call them. I think it would be a fun project, and I've gone so far as to buy a bow. but really, if I'm not doing it on a cold Sunday in feb when I'm almost snowed in, I'll probably never do it. still, this guy did, to great effect . . . . https://w...

Re: Music and Noise
Noise is music when music is defined loosely. Noise is not music when noise is defined specifically. This. if you define music as "art made with sound", then yes, noise is music. but if you define music as say the western twelve tones of A, B, C#, etc, and how they can be arranged to form...

so I spent the night trying to mend a broken noise track with a remix, while drinking maybe a few, two, tree dozen beers. I finish up by spinning K2 Rainy Tritium v3 and wake up to find my last notebook scribbling of the night was. . . . "K2 = thats beautiful beyond my wildest dreams". may...

Re: Listening (to) space: Mono vs stereo
Stereo - 100%. I tend to use headphones for listening to noise, but I also have a stereo I run the turntable and tape deck through. I do not listen to noise through a phone or single blue tooth speaker setup, which I'm supposing are the traditional mono setups? also, for what it's worth, I tend to d...

I was hoping to see Deterge, oh well. got my ticket.
you had me do a double take with the "vegan" pierogi thing, but I suppose the cheese.
I'm expecting a great time!

now that the whole "fear of the unknown" thing is out of the way, I'm down for playing NYC again. If it happens I'll make sure you know about it, that's for sure. and the BBQ - don't threaten me with a good time! I can help man the grill, or make the cocktails. I have, uh, experience in th...

Re: Sept 15, 2023 - Bob Marinelli/Star/Alberich/Skin Crime
Hadn’t heard of Noise NYC before, I’ll have to check it out. I do know that there wasn’t a coordinated effort to get video or audio. It smelled like the task of getting the artists and venue all together in time and on the same page required enough effort by itself. I DID get audio of all the sets (...

Re: Sept 15, 2023 - Bob Marinelli/Star/Alberich/Skin Crime
It went off. I think, and I’m guessing so you can probably find a better answer from someone who is actually in the know, that the space was rented for the show by International Misanthropy and Fringe. And so it didn’t get loaded into the venue’s marketing machine. So not on their postings, announce...

hey guys! I have a show . . . in the NYC! and Skin Crime is going to be there! As well as Star, Alberich, Half Mortal . . . well, I'm sure you can read the flyer. 6pm start time = day drinking on a Friday in my book, which is the sign of a good life. If you're in the neighborhood, come on out and we...

someone mentioned that a turn off of theirs was noise with drums in it. Fair enough, sounds like something that could go very wrong. Re: Moving beyond "noise for noise's sake"
I'm curious about when and how one eventually crosses the boundary between listening to noise for noise's sake (i.e. in passing, as relative background music, or "just for fun") to active listening and a potentially higher appreciation of the sounds. Right out of the gate, very first thin...

Packaging and Playability
I was going to post this in the "Mourning . . . " thread, but how do I mourn the loss of something I never heard? OVMN.jpg I got this from Macro Joe, but I never did think a cd wrapped in red duct tape was going to be playable. It's OVMN something or other. Also, I've never actually heard ...

Re: Time signatures in noise
SHORT ANSWER - No, not all noise is in 4/4. LONG ANSWER - For the last few years I've been spending my nights banging on the drums reading sheet music, so "time signature" caught my eye. Obvious Disclaimer - I wasn't at the show, so what do I know? That being said . . . Not all noise is in...

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD
Thank you! You must have a long memory! it's a Mackie 1202 I got off of eBay. I bought one when they came out, and ran it into the ground. that took about 20 years, but whatever. so I replaced it with the same model. I'm sure they're on reverb.com as well for about $100. mine is the old preamps (not...

Great thread - it's generated a lot of ideas. So many pieces of gear that seem common but I never knew existed as well. My main rig is an SM57 mic plugged into small mixer with a two aux sends that go to a DOD Death Metal and a DOD Grunge. got them new 20+ years ago. add a pile of scrap metal and I ...

Listening Environment
The last few things I did and sent off to friends, I felt the need to actually Say "it's in stereo, don't bother listening to this on your computer or from an iPhone on your desk". When I listen to noise, it's by default through headphones - whether it's out in the shop while working, or i...
