Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels

The other thought I had after reading Oskar’s post is, and I’m not saying it was his intent to do so, I don’t think people should be made to feel guilty for being unwilling to offer an automatic $5 per month in support of a label or artist. I think this is a very fair statement from our friend Thom...

Re: Books

On a John Langan kick recently. Very much enjoyed The Fisherman . I read this earlier this year - wonderful book!!!!!!! Best thing I read this year. Very much enjoyed the story within a story reminiscent of Arthur Machen. I also recently read: Blood Meridian - Cormac M - didn't love it. Didn't hate...

Re: Opinions on digital subscriptions to labels

Digital subscriptions don't interest me in any way but if it works for the artist I hope it's a viable model. How much of getting a record goes to fees, postage, packing supplies, printer paper, tape, etc? I'm lucky enough that I'm able to send Taylor the bulk of my noise cash (AKA disposable income...

Re: A Post-Discogs Future

I still use discogs - A LOT! But I think as a seller I might have to rethink things. I rarely order anything from outside of Canada any more. It just doesn't make any financial sense. Even US shipping has gone out to lunch, I was considering ordering a couple of (admittedly heavy) DLPs from NWN and ...

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

I also wanted to say that I think in this day and age of oversaturation, high shipping rates, deluxe reissues and the overall high cost of living there's a huge difference for me between "I like this" and "I will purchase this". There's just too many albums of all genres I don't ...

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

I go through this song and dance with Black Flag's album My War. I go back to it periodically but I just cannot get into it for the life of me. I hope my friend, that one day you find joy in this wonderful record and then you come back and share it with us. I feel like at some point in my mid to la...

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

Agree, though I still cannot get into Killing Joke, even though I've seen them more times than I care to remember which was usually the point in the show I'd go piss or get a drink. Yet I watched the documentary "The Death and Resurrection Show" recently and found them fascinating. Maybe ...

A Post-Discogs Future

So I'm sure this is common knowledge by now but Discogs has raised it's fees from 8% to 9% and is also charging fees on the shipping cost as well - in what world does THAT make sense? So you pay a fee to discogs, another fee for shipping and another fee to paypal? It's nuts. Anyway for me - I'm done...

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

Part of what I love about listening to this stuff (and most other music really) is that approaches or styles I currently don't care about are things I might be completely obsessed with in a year or two or ten or twenty. There were times when I really didn't understand or even enjoy certain artists ...

Re: What is your criteria for how you decide if you like noise?

You know how Peter Gabriel just knew what he liked in your wardrobe? Well I think I'm of the age where I pretty much know just by looking at the cover if I'm going to like a record or not. Tim Yohannon said the same thing one time reviewing a Hellnation record. This doesn't mean I only like records ...

Re: Domestic Noise

There was one Kevin Drumm drone CD that was mastered at a ridiculously low volume - Trouble (I think?). It was so quiet you had to either have it quiet in the background or crank it on your player. I never really gelled with the final product but it was an interesting idea that the environment and p...

Re: Domestic Noise

I'm a little confused, are we just heading into ambient/minimal territory here? Eno's original definition of Ambient Music, from the liner notes of Ambient 1: Music For Airports (1978), states: “Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in par...

Totally agree with this, but will I be able to resist yet another Shonberg LP with our boy Arnold, arms crossed in a really crisp suit looking stern and yet somehow kind and warm?

Re: Mourning damaged releases thread

That Government Alpha / Bastard Noise / Hiroshi Hasegawa 7" has a re-seal-able lip on it, when I was pulling it out it it touched the record and it got adhesive on the actual 7". I cleaned most of it off but it still makes pops for a minute and my needle is a pricey MF so it does not get p...

Re: Film Discussion / Now Watching

I don't watch a lot of movies so I'll just keep popping in here with shows I've seen... The Dropout - I read the book Bad Blood about Elizabeth Holmes and thought ha ha this might be fun. Wow did I hate her voice. It's no fault of Amanda Seyfried, she did a great job. Dopesick - I read the book, tho...

Re: Listening Environment

Any "serious" or "detailed" listening is done on my home stereo. there's a thread on hi-fi thread floating around, I want to be enveloped in sound, I don't want to listen through headphones. I want to feel that bass bumpin' - I don't have that audiophile spending tendencies becau...

Finally picked up the new Sulfuric Cautery LP and it rips hard. Slightly older but the Death Toll 80K "The Future Is Yours" one sided LP fucking slays too. DT80K are definitely keeping it fuckin' real as the kids say.

Re: Pathways to Noise / Place and Time

I wonder if there are any 2nd generation noise artists who like heard Merzbow for the first time as a toddler. Total Mom/Better Flesh is the only example I'm aware of this, besides maybe Aaron Dilloway's kid. Okay I can't remember the name of the project but there's a noisecore/harsh noise project ...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

I recall reading (on one of the now defunct noise forums) that (I'm paraphrasing here) noise was typically something you got into later in life - there's no way to objectively measure that as truth but from my experience I see way more young people who aren't cycling through grind/metal/punk before ...

Re: Generational differences in the noise community

I think we're seeing noise at it's most popular at the present time. Was it the pandemic keeping everyone at home for three years? You either bought an acoustic guitar or a Death Metal pedal along with your sourdough starter..... or is it an over-saturation of repetitive rock and pop genres that's c...

Re: Packaging and art at the expense of…

While good packaging can't make up for a "bad" release, it's all subjective and I think I can safely say that for me "bad" packaging can hinder my appreciation to a certain extent. When I say "bad" I typically mean underwhelming effort or sloppy presentation, not artwor...
