Re: Production Techniques

ooooo, good topic! For Juhyo, we generally record jams as two stereo pairs (one from each of our mixers) to four tracks of a Zoom H6. We'll take the files and load them into a DAW (for years was Tracktion, then moved to Ardour for a few years before recently coming back to Tracktion on Ubuntu), list...

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

I don't know if it's still sold but I got it from https://www.etsy.com/shop/ElectroLobotomy. If you know how to solder it wouldn't be too hard to make yourself. Basically it's a wooden board with 3 large springs attached to it, coupled with a contact mic and amplifier. Cool cool. I made a quick and...

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

Anyway use what you want I don't care, but why not use a better tool for the job? because "better" is so subjective. I tried using Premiere for years for video editing, and got nothing done because I just couldn't wrap my head around the workflow and operation of it. When Sony Vegas added...

Curious to get more info on the spring device, and I like the two-plane setup of the modular rig!

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

and I'll follow up with this, about any tool - use what you're comfortable with, and what provides the least amount of friction between your brain and what you want to create. If you find GIMP to have a difficult learning curve, or just isn't comfortable for you, use Photoshop! If Audacity doesn't d...

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

People are still using Gimp? Jesus Christ. Using Gimp for artwork is like using Audacity for a audio project with multiple stems. Do yourself a favour and save up for something like Affinity Photoshop or something that's at least not as archaic as Gimp. Yeh you can learn Gimp but it will save a lot...

Some of the artists appearing multiple times over the years: GNAWED STRAIGHT PANIC CUSTODIAN (plus Kathogah, plus Utica Crib) ANTHONY AMELANG DOLORES DEWBERRY BACULUM plus plenty of others, the 2018 ...

Two things to recommend -

"Parents" - under-appreciated weird horror from Bob Balaban in 1989. Trailer - https://youtu.be/VVDxDXq1VEY

"Vore King" - documentary from 2016 - hard to describe, check the trailer - https://youtu.be/VVDxDXq1VEY

When playing live, if you're not in some sort of costume for the performance, when you're picking out your shirt for the show... always rep your friend's bands.

Re: Self Releasing/Starting Labels

GIMP is perfectly capable for layout work. Second what was said above - get a template file from NAC or wherever, import it into GIMP at 300dpi (or better if you have higher resolution printers available to you, but 300dpi is generally fine. Add a transparent layer above it (usually at the lower lef...

Re: Advice for a newbie

Just to be clear, I meant that I am the person congratulating the artist in the imaginary exhange above. I probably should just stop asking others if they’re happy with their set and let them know I myself liked it. I will also offer criticism if asked, especially if it’s a show I myself am organis...

Re: Advice for a newbie

In my experience this happens about 100% of the time: yeah, and I used to do it a ton myself. I'm actively trying (and encouraging others to try, ESPECIALLY people who are new to live performance) to accept praise, accept that even if I had issues someone else enjoyed what I did, and I don't need t...

Re: THE DREADED GEAR THREAD

the thing I like most about the 404 is the ability to play loops of differing bar lengths, so depending on how long the loops are, the piece as a whole will never repeat. so much of my use has been just that - not sequencing with it, not using the internal effects, not sampling directly with it, but...

I'll throw in a plug for my pal Andy's label Mortville - he goes deep, he puts out a lot of stuff, and pretty sure it's all free / pay what you like downloads on BC. https://mortvillenoise.bandcamp.com/ Full disclosure, I'm in Big Fist Johnny with him, and provide drums for some of the more recent C...

oooh, forgot to mention Planetary - really liked that series! Nice meta-take on lots of different genre fiction & comic tropes (Tarzan, Dracula, Superman, Fantastic Four etc) smartly executed through the lens of a team of "weirdness hunters" with superhuman abilities.

Re: Advice for a newbie

a thing that I’ve started doing is to let my recordings rest for a while before going back into them. Just to get a somewhat fresh view on the quality of the recordings, both source material and sessions before mixing. This is never bad advice. It's amazing how much a little distance will allow you...

Re: Advice for a newbie

That makes me think of another advice : learn to solder. Wether it's just fixing your cables or making a contact mic, building/repairing pedals/modules or designing your circuits... It's cheap, quite easy, and it opens a lot of possibilities. That said, I am also guilty of the dumb faulty cable put...
