Very happy to se Vostell mentioned! Probably time to pull that one out for a spin.BobD. wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 6:54 pm I've got a lot of down time at work today, so why not?
A few of my favorites, no particular order:
Wolf Vostell- Decollage Musik (proto-noise I suppose but still way weirder than you)
Fossils/Darksmith- Million Year Spree
Agog- Dust Is Their Food And Clay Their Meat
Yeast Culture- IYS
Aaron Dilloway- Modern Jester
Joseph Hammer/Jason Crumer- Show 'Em The Door
Small Cruel Party- Accident In Substance
Evil Moisture- Yerm Flowers
Hands To- Scrine
Modern Jester definitely deserves a spot in any decent list of greats.
Curious about the Fossils/Darksmith.

Agog is an artist I can’t sing the praises of enough.
For the unaware, I would highly recommend the quoted release, and also the “Spagyric” compilation for a further look at his collaborators during the 1980s.

If someone were to make the claim that there actually were a better Swans recording, I'd have to ask them to step outside. Where a certain public spectacle awaits.

The Rita - Sea Wolf Leviathan (Soilpsism, 2004)
Dynamic wall perfection.
Grunt - Seer Of Decay (Freak Animal, 2006)
Perfect mixture of noise, PE and industrial, builing an incredibly intense atmosphere.
Shredded Nerve - Acts Of Betrayal (Chondritic Sound, 2020)
Obscure, creeping and satisfyingly unsettling.
Rodger Stella & Scant - Third Phalanx (New Forces, 2016)
"Imagine a perfect one-second noise loop stretched out for 40 minutes, subjected to expert manipulation and increasing violence."
Herukrat - I Bear Witness (Total Black, 2014)
Atmospheric, aggressive and just a great mixture of all elements. Also one of the first noise/PE-records that totally blew me away with the first listen and still do every time.
Honorable mentions:
Exploring Jezebel – With Total Passion And Starvation... (Sexcrime Arts, 2010)
- First HNW that sucked me (pun intended) in completely and just left me speechless. Set and setting (=amount of edibles ;)) were just perfect. Good memories...
Breached Hull - Into The Black (Waterpower, 2012)
- Also one of my entry points into the world of noise, PE, etc. Eclectic, cinematic, great release overall.

Yeah, Agog is so so good. His sound kind of hits the bullseye for me, combining a lot of my favorite aspects of ‘80s and ‘90s noise and tape music. It would be nice to see some kind of box set of his hard to find cassette releases, I know there’s a lot I haven’t heard.
I was actually introduced to Agog via one of your playlists a few years back, so hey thanks!
He definitely nails the home taper sound, nobody does it like him. Yes, a boxset of some sort would be fantastic, most of those tapes are very rare. The packaging is insane on some, it couldn't be replicated, but a nice booklet with photos of the OGs would be sufficient.
There's a significant amount of unreleased material too, if I'm not mistaken. I hope it become available one day. The Agog/Zanstones/Brown tape Tribe put out last year is really good.

Curious about the Fossils/Darksmith.
[/quote]
It’s the split LP on Kye, maybe from 2011? It was my introduction to both artists and a high point for each I think. Fossils mostly put out “live to tape” junk improv (which I also love), but their Kye releases have more of a composed feel. It was a big pressing (relatively speaking) and I believe it’s still widely available and cheap. I even see it in record stores occasionally.

But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
Yes, it seems to be easy enough to get even now. Fossils were (are?) one of those groups I enjoyed just fine but the amount of stuff coming out was too much to stay anywhere near on top of and, being honest, could be hit or miss. As much as I have lots of time for prolific jammers who throw it all out there and leave it up to you to discern where the gold is, I often wonder what might happen if artists like that went the other direction and really honed in on just making one or two really brilliant things per year. What you describe here sounds like something I'd really like. I must grab one eventually.BobD. wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 10:47 am It’s the split LP on Kye, maybe from 2011? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre soundtrack. Don’t think there has ever been an official release, but the influence of Tobe Hooper and Wayne Bell looms over just about everything we’re talking about here.

Not sure about a complete list, but this release will always be one of my favorites. Both sides are great but the Paranoid Time side in particular is an example of perfect harsh noise for me.

In terms of pure talent and originality, Brume "Normal".
Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
venerology, probably. the first album that popped to mind and stuck on top even though i tried to think of more releases for a proper list.
it's been a while since i've listened to noise stuff in general, for a few years it's been mainly noisecore etc extreme music, so i haven't even listened to a lot of the releases mentioned here. need to dive back to the world of noise soon i think and get some new favourites...
