What extreme metal are you listening to or stoked on? Figured I'd start this thread. Just ordered this on cassette and it's pretty ripping.

this is already almost a decade old and probably known to connoisseurs of this sort of music, but damn this album kicks ass. hard.

perversion's archaic death metal is a more recent fave, as well as mephitic corpse's immense thickening vomit. i'm very much into old school/old school influenced dm shit, especially with demo quality recording... pretty much the only bm i dig is the blasphemy/revenge/damaar type chaotic war metal stuff.

My new metal purchasing/listening has done a real nosedive these last two years. Just not a ton that’s really grabbing me but everything always moves in cycles.

HOWEVER the new Cerebral Rot LP is fuckin’ ham slapper. I really like that band and Fetid - hoping for another LP from them as well.

The other band I’m really into is Thætas - from NYC I think? They’re on Maggot Stomp and….. I guess it’s a mix between Gorguts and Suffocation? It’s so sick. The LP is great and there’s demo 7” that fuckin’ slays.

I also love that Miasmatic Necrosis LP - I guess GORE is the LAW for me at the moment.

FUCK YEAH cerebral rot. great stuff. haven't checked the LP yet though, i've been really digging their EP's/demos.

you might fancy malignant altar. they just released a full length as well, and i was very glad to hear they didn't polish their sound too much from the demos.
though the full length is awesome i'm still posting their "retribution of jealous gods" demo instead:

20 Buck Spin is pretty awesome right now. That new Cerebal Rot I picked up on cassette along with a few other I wanted but thought it’d be cheaper to get ‘em on that format all at once. Hoping once the pandemic dies down they’ll come up north for some live stuff. Witch Vomit is my favourite on there though. Just great riffs and atmosphere.

Black Metal has been the primary music I listen to since high school, however kind of lost interest in 2020. New stuff just doesn't hit the same and a lot of the mystique that drew me in isn't there anymore. Since then I have still listened to a handful of the staples such as Absurd and Graveland.

Lately, I've been spending more time with BM again, specifically revisiting old favorites from the late 90s/early 00s. Listening to a lot of Seigneur Voland, Heldentum, Bilskirnir, Musta Surma, Warloghe, Chemin de Haine, Godless North, Osculum Infame, etc. There is a magic in these projects that simply isn't there with newer ones. Especially observing bands from the North American anglosphere, it feels a bit fake, just another subgenre revolved around friendship, its too safe.

However, there are a few releases from last year that I hold in high esteem - Palemort and Peste Noire both released incredible LPs. Arzacq released very strong demos, especially the second one. Vaal is another project that I continue to admire.

Recent favorites include the Pâlemort LP on TDG, the recent Nächtlich tape "Satanas Solum Initium Est" which felt like a big jump forward with more interesting melodies, new Hail Conjurer LP, Council Daimonion 7"... I've also been enjoying some of the Moonblood rehearsal reissues although it certainly feels like I don't need to be a completist with them.

The Bekhira LP has been repressed by Impure Wedding. Some of the best French BM ever.
http://www.impurewedding.com/products/7 ... -du-mal-lp

Otherwise been listening to Rattenfanger, Odelegger, Pathologist. newer Bone Awl, and some of those Moonblood demos. I really dig the Siegfried one. The new Ride for Revenge is massive as well; honestly feels more like "sludge" or something, but they're always described as "black metal". The Voltaic Omen/Ahulabrum LP on Ixiol is great too - Voltaic Omen side is heavy, straight forward ripping black metal, while the Ahulabrum side is kind of like, UFO themed PE/black metal? Very cool stuff and the best I've heard from the project.

I'm digging all these BM suggestions. Generally, out of all genres, black metal is the one I'm the most picky about so I'll pop these in the pile of things to scope.

Seconded for this one. Krallice is an untouchable band for me and have not once disappointed me with their output. 3/4 band members swapped instruments for this one as well.

Used to really like Krallice and haven’t really kept up. Parted with my vinyl copy of Diotima ages ago due to financial issues, amidst some other greats (Tenebrae In Perpetuum, Antaeus). I trust that whatever they’re up to is gonna be pretty goddamn good.

It is.

I haven't enjoyed many new BM releases besides the last Absu, Warloghe and Helwetti LPs, which kind of bums me out. I'm not really into the raw black metal scenes from the US, Portugal, etc in which I only hear bad noise and no riffs. I'm sure there must be exceptions here and there but I haven't found them. I'm also not into the war metal, Samael or Beherit worship stuff (there's also so much one can do by following such strict sound formulas.) On the other hand, I wish I heard more bands that sounded like Enslaved on "Frost", Isvind on "Dark Waters Stir" the first Ulver album, etc. Hulder had a really good Gorgoroth-like approach on her last album and I can't wait for the follow-up.

There's a Skuggeheim discography LP announced on Terratur Possessions, which I'll make sure to grab. The demo and 7"es were incredible and really had that early Ulver/Isengard feel that I don't seem to hear anywhere anymore.

Also, the last two Worm albums were quite amazing. The blend of genres work really well, the riffs are good and the musicianship is incredible. The guitar solos (soli?) have such an 80's/99's flavor!

I fired up "Mardraum" by Enslaved not too long ago after years of not listening to it, and it's aged well. I keep forgetting about them.

And the Worm release from 20 Buck is great, and I'm excited to see how they're going to progress. Reminds me a lot of Unholy (clearly).

Dragged Into Sunlight have been teasing a new album for a long time, but still no official release date announced. I checked out their EP from 2020, which is just one song a half hour in length. Seems like it was a bit of a throwaway release, potentially to end their contract with Prosthetic? I remember reading somewhere that the relationship between label and band had soured. Either way, I'm looking forward to another proper album by them. Hatred For Mankind and N.V. are both fantastic records and still get played on a semi-regular basis around here.

New album is great. Yeah, I suppose they are black metal in presentation, but when I think about this band, it's always in the company of bands like Rusted Shut, Brainbombs, No Balls, etc.

Yeah, "Mardraum" is insane and such a crazy style change for them to make considering where their earlier records were heading. But I've been playing it a bunch last year as well and it rules. I've also finally tried listening to "Monumension" and "Below The Lights" last year and I was soooo pleasantly surprised. They're really great. There is a documentary about Enslaved in several episodes that was posted on YouTube last year. It's very interesting.

And yes, Worm suck up their influences really well. I only see them do great things in the future.

I never liked death metal aside from a few projects (Bolt Thrower especially), but I have gotten into a lot of black metal bands. Burzum and his followers stand at the front of what first grabbed my attention when exploring extreme music: Xasthur, Paysage d'Hiver, Drudkh and so on. Currently I am liking all of the Circle 4444 Reich bands (Reek of the Unzen Gas Fumes, Grizzly Fetish, Nigamushi, Thy Sepulchral Moon, and the others), as well as the current Sri Lankan scene bands.

I remember enjoying Agalloch back when everyone was glowing their shit for “The Mantle” but haven’t gone back in a long time. Maybe 20 years is enough time for me to “mature” but I’ve really been digging it lately as well as the next couple records.

Also jamming perennial favourite Forgotten Woods a ton lately.

Spitehowling - Born to Die for Evil (Russian BM associated with Far East Black Wolves collective https://darkeastproductions.bandcamp.co ... e-for-evil)

Hierophant's Descent - The Apocalypse of Evil (Hellenic BM https://www.discogs.com/artist/3160017- ... ts-Descent)

Alfunde - Amesoeurs (post-punked out off-shoot of Peste Noire, very good)

Bilskirnir - In Flames of Purification (German pagan BM https://www.discogs.com/release/2036210 ... rification)

Goatpenis (Brazilian blackened death metal https://nuclearwarnowproductions.bandca ... etic-vapor)

Torgeist - Time of Sabbath EP (one of the Les Legiones Noires bands, https://youtu.be/pqXkFdY0QNQ)

Nyogthaeblisz - Apocryphal Precursor To The Great Tribulation (Texan BM sleaze noise and a great band to shock your friends with https://youtu.be/Vn3wIy8x5KM)

Tetragrammacide (Indian BM or perhaps war metal, but regardless very insane and disgusting https://tetragrammacide.bandcamp.com/al ... oterrorism)

Trelldom's Grott - Bizarre Troll Technology (Finnish BM in the early stuff, became semi industrial with later releases https://tetragrammacide.bandcamp.com/al ... oterrorism)

Heroin Makes Happy (a drug themed very weird hardly BM sort of rock n roll project by German artist Andreas Bettinger https://youtu.be/q87XyAb6wPI)

GUT - Odour of Torture (pornogrind legends https://youtu.be/AONWRhestCo)

Krisiun - Black Force Domain (Brazilian death metal legends https://youtu.be/GENaAZxcCCs)

Antediluvian (these guys get a lot of shine these days but I'm giving them more shine, they're amazing)

For the hell of it, my all time favorite BM bands are: Summoning, Beherit, and Abruptum

Given my early interests in outsider music tended towards no wave, post punk and noise rock (etc...), it took me a while to fully dive into underground extreme metal. Once there, I realized that these guys often achieved a level of avant-gardeist dissonance and bizarreness unconsciously and without "experimental" intent that most no wave bands never achieve. It's almost like accidental avant-garde music, and this isn't just in the BM and more fucked sub-genres, but there are thrash bands that sound weirder than anything else that came out in the '80s: Holocausto, Necrodeath, Slaughter Lord, early Sepultura and more are what I wanted no wave to sound like.

Antediluvian played here the other month and it was surreal. I know that Tim/Haasiophis went to art school and it definitely shows in how they present that band in a unique and interesting way. Totally brilliant stuff in my opinion. He also does vocals in another more out there project called LARVAL (which may be coming out on Bent Window in the near future...)

Antediluvian played here around the time Cervix came out - with Adversarial which was so sick. It was an amazing show, they crushed it so fuckin’ hard.

I haven’t heard the new one or the split they did recently but hopefully I’ll get both at some point.

I've been blasting the last Gorephilia's album lately. I love everything they did before but that last record really sounds like what Morbid Angel's "Domination" should have been.

The last Mortiferum album also caught me off-guard.

And I have yet to find current BM bands that are exciting to my ears. Lately, I jammed some Arckanum ("Kaos Svarta Mar" and "Kostogher") and Old Wainds ("Religion Of Spiritual Violence", although my favourite of theirs will always be "Where The Snows Are Never Gone.")
