Cut Up
if you know me, which i assume most of you dont, you know that i primarily care about cut up harsh noise. thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to discussing new cut up projects, techniques and maybe even rehashing ideas about the cut up greats harsh or otherwise.
what are some current cut up projects we should be paying attention to?
do you make cut up? share a link and/or discuss your process! also everyone loves some gear porn.
pressortape out of seattle is a great label putting out primarily cut up material and doing lots of beautiful packaging. most notably the NBDY cassette that came in a wooden box with berries and like pine needles in it. also if youre a cut up head and havent checked out NBDY from czech republic i highly recommend his work. iron cross and sampler mangling. also the hanzo hasashi release on pressor was 🤌

Hell yes let’s goooooooooooo
My HN project is cutup and I go by Peace Doctrine. I had three releases last year including a split with the mighty Vomit Arsonist and one on pressortape. I use two samplers and a joystick simultaneously but it’s kind of a mess.
I’m going to try to use a simpler rig one my new trog stick shows up

Developer is pretty much the only one I know of and I've seen Matt multiple times because he lives one city over from me. Anything on that level would be interesting to hear.

there is little on his level imo at least. sickness, facialmess, and kazumoto endo are the obvious go-to’s for cut up aside from developer but in the past few years scum and scathing have really been killing it in the cut up/fast harsh noise realm.xIncorruptibleCorpse777x wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 3:58 am Developer is pretty much the only one I know of and I've seen Matt multiple times because he lives one city over from me. When you say "scum and scathing", do you mean two different projects or just one?parasitenurse wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 8:29 pmthere is little on his level imo at least. sickness, facialmess, and kazumoto endo are the obvious go-to’s for cut up aside from developer but in the past few years scum and scathing have really been killing it in the cut up/fast harsh noise realm.xIncorruptibleCorpse777x wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 3:58 am Developer is pretty much the only one I know of and I've seen Matt multiple times because he lives one city over from me. Kazumoto Endo is sick, I'll check out more of his stuff!!!! Already a fan of Sickness, but only heard a couple releases.
Never got into Facialmess for some reason, but I do enjoy Like Weeds A LOT. Go figure.

scum and scathing are two different projects. scum is from japan and scathing is from austin, tx. highly recommend both their new forces tapes. also that new endo/boar split is *so* good. its on bandcamp, came up pretty easily when i searched for it.xIncorruptibleCorpse777x wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 4:53 amWhen you say "scum and scathing", do you mean two different projects or just one?parasitenurse wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 8:29 pmthere is little on his level imo at least. sickness, facialmess, and kazumoto endo are the obvious go-to’s for cut up aside from developer but in the past few years scum and scathing have really been killing it in the cut up/fast harsh noise realm.xIncorruptibleCorpse777x wrote: ↑Thu Feb 10, 2022 3:58 am Developer is pretty much the only one I know of and I've seen Matt multiple times because he lives one city over from me. Me (scathing) and Scum actually talked about doing a split a while back but nothing came of it. I should hit him up again about that.parasitenurse wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 8:44 amscum and scathing are two different projects. scum is from japan and scathing is from austin, tx. highly recommend both their new forces tapes. also that new endo/boar split is *so* good. its on bandcamp, came up pretty easily when i searched for it.xIncorruptibleCorpse777x wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 4:53 amWhen you say "scum and scathing", do you mean two different projects or just one?parasitenurse wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 8:29 pm

Re: Cut Up
Maybe you should also post links to your stuff, too? And in your signature? Scathing is not exactly easy to google. I did find some stuff on bandcamp besides the New Forces release, though...KRB wrote: ↑Sun Feb 13, 2022 11:19 amMe (scathing) and Scum actually talked about doing a split a while back but nothing came of it. SBTDOH and Maltreatment both rule as well. Very much worth checking out. Can’t forget to mention NBDY either although Sam already did, NBDY is not to be missed.

Re: Cut Up
I will say, for those not inclined to use a computer to edit this kind of material you really cannot beat a high-end cassette deck with some kind of electronically actuated play/pause mechanism. I have a Sansui D-W10 which a friend gave to me and it is astounding how precise the pause control is, with zero 'lag' on take-up when recording.
Re: Cut Up
Probably already mentioned: Sickness, highly recommend the Purgatory CD reissue that Cipher Productions (Australia) did, that for some reason it's still available, here a link: https://cipherproductions.storenvy.com/ ... rgatory-cd
Also come to my mind the recent Body Stress "Understimulated" tape I released, Body Stress is Martin Schacke who runs Moral Defeat and Scream & Writhe still have copies: https://www.screamandwrithe.com/product ... ulated-cs/ or if you want to listen it's available on my Bandcamp: https://moderndecadence.bandcamp.com/al ... stimulated

Plugging a Brachliegen release (apologies) but this from a dear friend came out last year: George Rayner-Law - Cantonese Tapework https://brachliegentapes.bandcamp.com/a ... e-tapework
"Tapefuck is similar to tapework, but, you know, fucked. A freedom in head-cleaning improvisation, via abusing cassette play heads."

Hey folks. Alex here. Boar is my project mainly focusing on cutup. Peyote tapes just put out the Boar/Kazumoto Endo 12”(I’ll post the link to that in the new release section sometime soon). I also run a label breaching static which also frequents cutup.

Names that I’d like to hear more when cutup is discussed are human fluid rot and mason. Though it might not be ultra panning cutup, shit still flys around for sure. Also TEF and Ahlzagailzehguh. Though mentioned a lot they are some of the best in my opinion.
Super stoked on this forum. Miss the old forum days. FB is really starting to suck. Hope this forum lasts!!!!

Mason and I actually have a split coming sometime this year. I agree he’s criminally underrated. Ahlzagailzeguh and TEF are absolutely crucial!
TEF has been one of my favorites for a while

Re: Cut Up
Cut up is my favorite part of the harshnoise, and there are some real killers in the genre right now. A short and non exhaustive list. I'm looking forward to seeing names that I missed.
US
Developer
Boar
Parasite Nurse
Human Fluid Rot
Ahlzagailzehguh
Sickness (obviously)
Scathing (though I'm not sure his is "cut-up", more fast paced harshnoise like Breaking The Will or Encephalophonic)
T.E.F
A Fail Association (so underrated)
Peace Doctrine
Mason (shameless plug)
Europe
Purgist
NBDY
Tourette
Body Stress
Chile
886-VG (his tape on Deathbed kills)
Japan
Facialmess (retired...but I'm hopeful)
Kazuma Kubota
Kazumoto Endo
Spore Spawn
Scum
Hanzo Hasashi
Shikaku
I also recommend picking up the Hard Panning compilation on Triangle Records and Cut-Up America on Factotum.

Re: Cut Up
Rig simplification is the holy grail of cut-up. I always look to that set that Developer did without any pedals, just tape decks and a mixer. And of course NBDY is the GOAT of using a tiny rig to get amazing cut-up. My rig is ridiculous....but one day I'll figure it out.MiseryEngine wrote: ↑Wed Feb 09, 2022 4:26 pm Hell yes let’s goooooooooooo

Re: Cut Up
i think theres something to be said for a table full of gear but i do like the prospect of not having to carry a million pounds of gear to shows at this point. i find the loads of gear vs minimal gear to be equally impressive as long as the execution is there. developer set ups are definitely wild to me and the nbdy set ups are mind boggling how he gets that many sounds out of so little. imo i guess what it really comes down to is source material. i did a collab with someone that has yet to see the light of day (and may just never at this point) where they sent me source material and i cut it up and it blew away anything i had been working on at the time. it really opened my eyes to using source material i never would have considered otherwise. i put a lot of emphasis on gear and not so much the more creative aspect of creating and capturing interesting sounds to run through said gear. but then i sold out to eurorack and im basically cheating now.Masonhn wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:38 pmRig simplification is the holy grail of cut-up. Re: Cut Up
There are advantages and disadvantages to a huge pile of gear. I can speak as a massive setup guy that two samplers, eight pedals, a joystick and a mixer and four contact mic instruments allows for a huge amount of performative flexibility and lets me play everything live without edits but even the act of just setting up my cutup rig alone is enough to keep me from doing it super often. Misery engine basically runs on one or two boxes and that’s it so setting up for PD is pretty daunting at times.
Re: Cut Up
That's something I realized years ago, while the gear is important it's your audio sources that will really make or break your sound. I'm still a gear obsessive though, always seems like just when I think I can put that to rest for a while there's some new audio mangling device that catches my eye, or one I'd either forgotten about or that slipped under the radar. And while I'm not that interested in cutting down the size of my at home recording gear, trying to put together a light and compact rig for live sets has been an ongoing process since my first live performance back in 1995.parasitenurse wrote: ↑Sun Feb 20, 2022 11:35 am i think theres something to be said for a table full of gear but i do like the prospect of not having to carry a million pounds of gear to shows at this point. i find the loads of gear vs minimal gear to be equally impressive as long as the execution is there. developer set ups are definitely wild to me and the nbdy set ups are mind boggling how he gets that many sounds out of so little. imo i guess what it really comes down to is source material. i did a collab with someone that has yet to see the light of day (and may just never at this point) where they sent me source material and i cut it up and it blew away anything i had been working on at the time. it really opened my eyes to using source material i never would have considered otherwise. i put a lot of emphasis on gear and not so much the more creative aspect of creating and capturing interesting sounds to run through said gear. but then i sold out to eurorack and im basically cheating now.
