Out of these, Sabotage and The Coffin in the Mountain really stole the show. China has been churning out some serious heavy hitters recently, especially in the bleak and slow-paced crime department. Black Coal Thin Ice, The Wild Goose Lake, A Touch of Sin, Ash is Purest White. Definitely worth following some of the directors involved.

I’m really far behind (read: I haven’t even started) with Chinese cinema. I’ve seen maybe one or two Chinese productions in my entire life. I don’t know if or when I’ll ever actually get there…

Tonight’s viewing was Costa-Gavras’ Une homme de drop aka Shock Troops, but the literal translation is “One Man Too Many”, which is a far more suitable title. An early Costa-Gavras effort and not as persistently intense as his greats like State of Siege, The Confession, or Z, but it isn’t too far behind. Lots of interesting camerawork including one of the greatest shots I have ever seen, period.

Last night we watched Satan War from 1979. Gloriously stupid, haunted house / exploitation flick capitalizing off of satanic panic and The Amityville Horror. Nice soundtrack of shitty synth as well.

recently rewatched "The Tenant" (Roman Polanski) and "Black Moon" (Louis Malle), this time on the big screen at Cinemateca Portuguesa.

during February I will watch "Máscaras" (Noémia Delgado) there, worth a watch if you enjoy ethnograhic film. it is centered around the portuguese Trás-Os-Montes region, on the top north of the country, same region explored by António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro on their poetic austere films.

Ripper is much more nihilistic and down right sadistic than Blood, but both are classics.

The Projection Booth podcast just posted their episode about Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge with guest host Samm Deighan who is always worth listening to. Past episodes about Jean Rollin's Lips of Blood (with Deighan) and John Boorman's Point Blank have been especially good.

Watched last night, only the second Peter Greenaway film I'd seen after A Zed & Two Naughts and really enjoyed it. Very mad baroque set design throughout and Jean-Paul Gaultier on the costume design. Probably the most vivid colour palette I'd seen since a festive re-watch of Fanny & Alexander.

"Máscaras" is a great piece of ethnography! And it's almost insane to believe this way of life was still quite common in the North of Portugal during most of the 20th century (the film is from 1976)

If you like this, you might be interested in these too, also from the North of Portugal, but from the region of Minho. Castro Laboreiro is a cul-de-sac trapped in the border with Galicia/Spain, where transhumance was the main way of living way until the 90's. Currently it is a desertified area of great, yet harsh beauty.

If you enjoyed these, you could do a lot worse than An Elephant Sitting Still by Hu Bo. Sadly the director committed suicide later and this is his only film.

Often times when I feel this way I just try to sit down and press “play.” Suddenly two hours have gone by and I’ve just watched Jacques Becker’s Le Trou and existence makes a bit more sense, or at least there is a moment’s satisfaction with a minor sense of acccomplishment.

I’ve had it sitting and waiting on my hard drive for a few years, but I’ve yet to work up the courage for the 4 hours and emotional toll I know it’s going to take!

A few recent watches and some quick impressions.

Jackass Forever: Absolute kino.

C'mon C'mon: Really solid. As usual Joaquin is the standout, but he also has this magnetism that helps him elevate everyone around him too.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022): Wretched. Do not add to cart.

Nightmare Alley: Very good, nice to have an actual old-school noir at a time of year that's usually just a horror dumping ground. Masterful work by del Toro as usual, but didn't 100% stick for me either.

Red Rocket: Like watching a movie full of IRL Grand Theft Auto characters in the best way.

Rewatch of The Nice Guys: If there was any justice, we would have been watching its second sequel in theaters last summer and for better or worse- its spinoff series on HBO Max this spring.

I'm slowly working through Michael Haneke's filmography. And I mean slowly. Each movie I've seen of his enters pretty emotionally bleak territory, so I'm not in a rush to marathon-watch them.

Last night, I sat down with The Seventh Continent. Very good, especially considering it's his film debut, though I think he was directing television before. I loved The Piano Teacher, Funny Games (both versions), and Benny's Video. Going to try and get The White Ribbon and Amour watched in the coming months.

Funeral Parade Of Roses is slept on. Fantastic disorienting visuals. What did you think of it? Double Indemnity is a classic, straight down the line. There is a 4K HDR release coming soon via Criterion which I am hella excited for. Have not seen the Oscar Micheaux documentary though! Where did you watch that?
