Discussion of Christian projects was starting to take over the documentary thread, so I thought it'd be a good idea to make this.

So... we've already discussed Clang Quartet (which is just one guy), someone brought up Blackhouse (industrial), I admitted to being a Christian... noiser? (my username should give that away...), aaaaaand I forget what else.

Is anyone familiar with White Trash, Inc/White Trash Noise Orchestra, Inc? Their 45 was my first exposure to experimental noise. Great stuff. Other acts include anaphylaxis (not sure if he's still into the Christian stuff, but he has a lot of material from that point in his life). Ritual Chair is absolutely intense power electronics about having been raped. She also does Cult of Mary, which is more or less sacred dark ambient. Christopher S. Feltner has some incredible stuff and also does the noisecore act known as BRICKS. I booked him (solo), Guillermo Pizarro (Flag Day Recordings), and Stephen Palke (I think he's focusing on shooting film now).

Mental Destruction is one of the only death industrial acts out there and were on Cold Meat Industry. I own their final album, Straw, on CD. It absolutely destroys. They're the single biggest influence on me (aside from John Cage). Sanctum (Sweden), also on CMI, were incredible and similar.

Mateo Paz does dungeon synth and neo-folk. Lonsai Maikov (France) is neo folk and industrial. The Revolutionary Army of the Infant Jesus is sort of neo folk?, Backworld definitely is.

I'm actually surprised that there are not more projects involving ideas of Christianity. Sexual anxiety/shame blended with a Christian sense of guilt/sin would be a great thematic basis for a project, now that I think of it.

Yup. There's a variety of online souces about it, but maybe this interview has the most interesting answer:

I think he converted around 1983 and this led to (or at least was parallel to) his first early "retirement". A LOT of his releases after the comeback have an explicit religious inspiration/subtext (the one I recorded with him, "Azazel", has references to Leviticus and Revelation).

To follow up with my project Herukrat that was just mentioned- that project is primarily about Islam, both my conversion to it, and larger more general themes of Islam and global conflict.

What about Con-dom's The Eighth Pillar (A Confession Of Faith) or All In Good Faith? Haare (not religious but still about spirituality)? Vatican Shadows Kneel Before Religious Icons (not noise but y'know still closely related) or Prurients Adam Tied To Stone?

Con-Dom is one of the remaining early British projects that I really have not investigated too much, but yes, I recall seeing religions themes frequently in what he does.

I've been releasing harsh noise exploring American Evangelicalism under the name Lapsed Baptist since 2014.

I grew up in a small-town, conservative church community, and was involved in church ministries into my early 20s, so my first noise releases utilized a lot of the ephemera I had from those early years -- sermon tapes, Baptist & non-denominational gospel albums, Focus On The Family media, etc. It started as a way to continue to process my deconstruction from the faith; now I'm growing more interested in exploring aspects of Xian culture that emerged from the 1960s-onward in response to greater cultural shifts. The most recent Lapsed Baptist tape (released on Glossolalia Records) was sourced from an anti-astrology seminar my father taped in the early 1970s.

I'll say a big influence to me has been the work of Herukrat and the devotion to faith in their works. My work in Lapsed Baptist isn't intended as a take-down of Xianity as a whole, but a response to my own dynamic and evolving relationship to a culture I was inculcated into at birth.

Being raised a Baptist in the NJ/NYC/PA areas as a kid was nowhere near as severe as it is for a lot of other people in America, though...
