V/A - Hominivorax (Cassette, Biotope Art Organization, 1990)

Subtitled “Experimental House Music”. Tape compilation with J.D.M., Brume, Big City Orchestra, Frak, Temple Beat, Black Bone Yard, From Nursery To Misery, and L’Edarps A Moth. 60 minutes of leftfield industrial / techno concrete. Harrowingly beat shit.

C.C.C.C - Gnosis (Usagi, 2021)

Pure psychedelia. C.C.C.C. really embody the ‘band of people doing noise’ approach, sometimes moreso than Hijokaidan. It always really sounds like a group effort with no one member doing too much at once. Lovely title for Usagi’s fine and under appreciated reissue policy.

Was having a conversation over the weekend about Navicon Torture Technologies \ Theologian and how his stuff is really criminally underrated \ rarely mentioned these days. Been on a major kick since then, basically playing through everything I have at my disposal. Currently listening to "The Further I Get From Your Star, The Less Light I Feel On My Face" CD on Crucial Blast. The 2nd track is a seriously heavy 25 minute ambient work. It seems to be available for a whole 5eu from plenty of places.

This is one of my favourite labels currently operating. The collab tape with Systems is incredible, rumbling tape-noise.

I oversold that one so don't have it around anymore, but Keeping In Touch is easily my most played tape this year. I keep meaning to go back and revisit the other tapes but this one isn't letting go just yet.

Hospital Productions - Year of the Reaper mix. Killer material, I just wish it came with a tracklist! There's some really great almost martial industrial stuff on the first side and I can't put my finger on who it might be.

Current 93 - If a City is Set Upon a Hill. A little more mellow than The Light is Leaving US All but beautiful and melancholic, as expected. The lyrics pair nicely with the "Rituals of War" book WVG mentions in the liner notes for "Sacred Violence Noise"; the "omen series" is such weird and evocative stuff.

I also caught Spiritualized on Saturday, total mindblower of a show.

I've only given it the once over so far, but definitely like it more than The Light..., which left a bit to be desired. I still think the last great Current 93 album was Black Ships Ate the Sky. Michael Cashmore was a critical component for my tastes.

I feel that. I'm a ben chasny / 6 organs fan, so I really appreciated his work on The Light... That said, yea, Black Ships is legit an all time great, I'd put it up there with any of the 90s records. These last few have felt a bit more slight, but maybe we'll get another ensemble monster at some point.

Been on a real Nirvana jam the last few days - I look at Dark Side of the Moon and Nevermind in a similar way - at different points in my life I was so burnt out on both but came around on how great they are….

Seems this is the year for rediscovering more obvious classics. I've been on a relatively big Floyd kick myself, DSoTM and Meddle in particular.
Steely Dan, Roxy Music, Talk Talk have also been in regular rotation, but I mustn't dwell on such pleasures too much here...

The Dust Bunnies - Black And White Music For Black And White People (1988, C60, Jim Tapes)

Out of the husk of James Levine’s Croiners project was this one-off oddity. While Jim’s collages with Croiners often veered towards cut-up techniques, this is a building work of tape music — in which repurposed jazz standards and orchestral swells are pitted against looped gnashes of feedback. A sure winner.
