Had a good weekend of films here.

Sunday was an afternoon screening of Angst, which I had never seen before and goddamn if at the cinema wasn't the best way to see it for the first time. Quite a remarkable film - I didn't expect the camerawork to be so creative in a film as savage as this, but that no doubt has helped its cult status. Something great was achieved with this.

Then in the evening it was to another cinema for a screening of The Swimmer in 16mm. Another one I'd been meaning to see for an age and finally crossed it off the list. The print wasn't the best, there were some sound issues and then technical difficulties when it came time to switch reels, but none it detracted from the film itself. I didn't know what to expect going in, and it's best to not know anything about it before hand. Great!

Other highlights at home from earlier in the week: Maps to the Stars (greatly anticipating Cronenberg's new one.), In the Heat of the Night (had held off on this one forever for fear of it being too on-the-nose, but it's nearly perfect. More great camerawork.), 92 in the Shade (Warren Oates and Harry Dean Stanton just riding out their days as boat guides in the Florida Keys, Peter Fonda starts some shit, and Joe Spinell shows up near the end. Margot Kidder for bonus points.), and last night was Tender Mercies which has Robert Duvall as a former country singer trying to get his life back together.

watched "The Getaway" yesterday, 1972 bank heist / revenge flick with Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw, Solid caper / thriller, directed by Sam Peckinpah, that features one of the coldest scenes I've seen in a long time.

Rudy goes into the bathroom.

That's it. Don't want to spoil it. Check it out, even factoring in Ali McGraw it's totally worth the watch. Bonus fun fact - her husband Robert Evans was so busy nitpicking Francis Ford Coppola during the making of "The Godfather", he never went to visit her on location and it contributed heavily to the breakup of their marriage!

Watched Antiviral last weekend which takes place in a celebrity-worshipping dystopia. I wish they blended that concept in more with something resembling the real world to make it more impactful. But overall, there were some bizarre and memorable scenes. The movie was directed by David Cronenberg's son Brandon, who makes explicit and implicit references to his father's work. I enjoyed it.

Full of caustic, biting dialogue and so many sly double entendres. Looking forward to checking out more of Sirk's work, currently available on Criterion.
Really enjoyed everything I've seen from Douglas Sirk, with All that Heaven Allows being one that I've repeatedly returned to.
I guess they're all leaving Criterion streaming at the end of the month, so I need to get to that one soon.

I finally watched The Exorcist III, and I liked it quite a bit. I don't think I have ever seen a horror movie that was structured so much around dialogue. You can really tell that Blatty wrote/directed it.

watched this last week, haven't stopped thinking about it since. i can't believe i'd never heard about it before.
f.m. einheit works at a burger joint in west germany. after stumbling upon an anarchist cult-type-thing led by genesis p. orridge, he learns that he can cause the public to go crazy and riot if he plays industrial noise music instead of muzak at work. absolutely unbelievable. the scene where he learns about the cult is basically a neubauten show from 84, just dudes banging on metal in an underground sewer somewhere. so fucking good.
soundtrack features soft cell, genesis p. orridge, f.m. einheit and einsturzende neubauten, and it's exactly as great as you think it is.

it's streaming free on tubi, and vinegar syndrome released a blu-ray recently. highly recommended.
Decoder is fantastic, i've laced stuff from this film into my noise stuff more times than i can remember. You forgot to mention the best part though, Christiane Felscherinow!!

I went and saw The Northman recently, really enjoyed it. It was more of a normal movie than The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers’ previous movie, but was still excellent. It strikes a good balance between simple entertainment and nerdy.

This past week was pretty much a film per day:

Love Exposure: I've been delaying this one since 2013, at least. A four hour journey through the psyche of a couple of japanese characters, teenagers or early adults, covering religion (christianity in particular), horniness and love. Pretty remarkable and super unpredictable. The ending was a joy to watch.

Some Kind of Monster: the story about the production of St. Anger. the doc is ok, the thing I liked most was watching Lars being an actual asshole and a really manipulative character. The discussions between him and James were funny. he really is a wiseguy! loved his art collection and his opinions on art lol. his drums here are so fucking awful. love how he's always the contrarian on every single debate. what a character

Red Rocket: dunno if there are any Sean Baker fans around here but I really enjoy his films. This one is assumedly a more comedic film from him, and I really liked all the open shots of Texas' plains. huge photography work here. characters are amazing, and a friend told me Simon Rex was the only true actor on this film (all the others are non actors hired for the film) even though I don't know the veracity of these claims. but Simon Rex should have won something for this role - amazing, believable work. the movie reminded me of a mixture between Buffallo 66 and The Big Lebowski lol. I really enjoyed it

The Batman - saw it for free on Crave, actually really, really enjoyed it. They cut a lot of the typical origin story out and made it way more like a detective story than a huge blockbuster. I thought there was a lot more realism to it (ie they did away with the typical “he’s gone!” scenes in every other Batman movie) and made him way more human, less “invincible gadget monster”. Zoe Kravitz was great. Five stars. I didn’t watch the Twilight movies so I didn’t have an opinion on Pattinson going in but he did a pretty good job even if he was maybe kind of not amazing in it? Like the rest of the cast, the sets, the plot were all kind of carrying him? I dunno. It was great.

Spider Man No Way Home - this one kind of sucked, and by kind of I mean a lot. My wife wanted to see it so we paid the $5.99 to see it. I wasn’t impressed.

I watch this every few years, just to examine the contrasts between what I want out of writing / performing music and working with others, and an unstoppable commercial machine driven by a pair of assholes who's work I used to love. It's also fun to see Trujillo come into the mix, at the time at least he seemed like a really genuine, grounded guy who just loves playing.

I basically watch this around Christmas every year with the same friend or two. It's incredible. The outtakes are some of the best/most hilarious parts.

Watched Amateur by Hal Hartley last night. The only Hartley film I knew was "The Unbelievable Truth", which I saw prior to this one. The deadpan dialogues here are great, story has the right amount of suspense and it doesn't linger on the unknown to make it bloom - the tragic last chapters of this movie are delievered with such honesty that I know this one will stray with me for a while. Isabelle Huppert, as always, is a monster of an actor: so believable, so human, a gorgeous presence. She plays the most wild, crazy original parts - and she displays badass outfits on this one. Great movie about love, sex (Huppert plays the part of a former nun, a self described - virgin - nymphomaniac), identity loss and the will to become a better person, to accept past, dreadful mistakes as part of human nature.

Just found out about this / watched today, which surprised me as I was familiar with Emshwiller as an illustrator. wasn't sure whether to post to the Noise Camera thread, this one seemed more appropriate.

Skipping straight to the end of this thread, as I'm tired and wanted to say a few things.

Heard some really good things about the new Top Gun, but I don't know if the critics who were allowed into the first screening were just paid off to hype it up. Doctor Strange 2 was a lot of fun, but too short. Didn't expect to like the new Batman, but I did. A lot. Could honestly have watched it even longer. It had some obvious flaws, of course, but I loved how it involved more detective work than any of the other live-action Batman movies thus far. I cut it some slack because of that.

I want to get back to watching shitty sci-fi flicks from the 70's. Not like I have much better to do while I recover from surgery.

watched this today:

Filmed in 1984 but never completed due to the original distributor going bankrupt, it sat in storage for 37 years until Vinegar Syndrome bought the assets... which didn't include audio tracks or a script, just 8 hours of film. So they sorted it out, got actors to dub the dialogue, and put it out last fall. If you have a taste for full-cheese 80's action / ninja / revenge flicks, it's worth checking out.

super bonus - keep your eyes peeled for an appearance from porn legend Sharon Mitchell!

Saw Vortex by Gaspar Noé on the movies this week. I'm a huge fan of his films, and even though I think he some times benefits, sometimes loses with the exploitation present in his cinema, this one was so precise, truthful and ultimately real that I finished watching the film literally speechless. Could not think of a thing I disliked here. And the split-screen is not just a gimmick, it translates into poetry. I can't recommend it enough and I think it's a good starting point for his cinema. In my opinion, his best film.

Caught this in the theatre. I need to watch it again before I really make up my mind. A lot of it was a bit too close to what Haneke already did with his 2012 film, Amour, so for that reason, it didn't leave the strongest impression on me. I also had an excruciating need to urinate the entire time, so I was in this unenviable position of trying to enjoy a beautiful art film while constantly being distracted by my bladder. For that reason alone, I'll rewatch so I can pay it my full attention. Split screen was 100% necessary in order to tell the story. Loved that element. Not sure if I'd agree that it's Noé's best, but it's certainly nice to see him branch out and do something different.

I caught the 4k resto of Dennis Hopper's Out Of The Blue, which is a personal favourite of mine. Severin just released the physical, so if you can't see it on the big screen, you can order it now (or wait six months until they do another sale). Starring Linda Manz in the lead role, who you might recognize from Gummo, Days of Heaven, and The Game. She delivers one of my favourite juvenile performances in all of cinema. Recommend for anyone who likes punk films and movies that aren't afraid to explore some pretty negative shit.

New Cronenberg film was good, but not great. Felt like more of a greatest hits or a victory lap than something new, but it's cool that he's still got the magic touch and wanted to please the old heads.

Really bummed I missed the Montreal screenings on account of being out of town, I was really anticipating it. Will probably pick up the blu in Severin's next sale, gripped a few other things this time around.

I thought it was fantastic. Ideas Cronenberg is back. It's Crash 2.0. Probably going to see it again next week.

Just got back from seeing a screening of Inland Empire. It was the first time I've ever seen it. Someone I ran into on the way there told me something rather misleading about it (and its quality), but going in with lowered expectations resulted in enjoying it more. Particularly liked the amount of Penderecki in the film, too!

Yeah I get what you're saying. I think there were enough differences between the two to tell them apart: Noé's movie was much darker, narrower, less static than Haneke's, which had all these open shots out of which I remember the wide, illuminated areas of their appartment (and Vortex too was a slow, static film, but I think his directing + the cinematography of Benoît Debbie keeps everything more interesting, claustrophobic and weird). But I get it, when the movie was announced I was like - really? another Amour? after watching I thought they were really different. even the fate of the characters has nothing to do with the original "old couple losing their minds" movie :) ------ about this, I still have to watch "The Father" starring Anthony Hopkins, which Noé cited as a big inspiration for Vortex - more than Amour, apparently.

I only thought this was his best because it's definitely his most mature movie, and the only "gimmick" it offers is actually really poetic and beautiful (the split-screen) and not just a shock tactic or an eye candy (albeit I love them). My favorite movie out of his used to be Enter the Void. I'm still missing out Lux Aeterna off his filmography. I've got to take care of that.

Last week I watched Halloween Kills which was definitely the fucking worst Halloween I’ve ever seen. Awful.

Last night was hanging out with my sister in law and her husband and they had a boot copy of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and it was GREAT. Better than I expected. Really funny and more touching than I expected. I would have been on board for a total stupid fest but this was just a solid movie. A+++++++
