New album coming soon I think. Recorded about 20 mins of dark ambient work for the release awhile back...will also feature some stuff by Harlowe from Funerary Call/Sistrenatus

Wow that is WILD - last record was what, 10 years ago? They rolled through on a tour and fucking tore the place to shreds, I feel like there were like 30 people there.

I feel like I’ve lost a lot lately of my interest in a lot of the death/black stuff from that era but I’m 109% down to hear a new album from them.

Gave Godkillers "The Rebirth Of The Middle Ages" a spin last night and I got to say I was blown away... similar to second wave norwegian black metal but with more symphonic elements, which aren't cheesy at all. the keys complement the guitars well and the melodies are really immersive, with a nice sound, production-wise, too. drums are killer, guitar riffs slay and vocals remind me of Burzum's shrieks... kind of. really passionate and agressive. it's a great hidden black metal gem. I can't recommend it enough.

Absolutely addicted to Moenen of Xezbeth lately. I think these are the same guys from Perverted Ceremony, it has a similar cavernous, smelly vibe. Great production and tasty synth work as well.

Every now and then, you find that one-in-a-thousand band that ticks all the right boxes for you.

Martire are that band for me. I never get tired of them. Their s/t EP has been one of my main go-to relases for the past three years or so.

Order from Chaos fulfill a similar role. And Bestial Mockery!

I like when the musicians sound like they're insane or having a nervous breakdown! :)

Martire, damn. Been a while! That EP is indeed a monster. Love the album too. Have to put them on later.

And as for Bestial Mockery, the guitarist(?) Master Motorsåg lived in the apartment across from ours on the same floor for five years if not more. Super shy guy. I could see him eyeing my shirts every time we shared the elevator, but he was afraid to make eyecontact. Good neighbor though, never any trouble there.

Hah, I have the OG CD here, blasted it the other day as I'm a huge sucker for that kind of stuff. It really is a great album for the genre.

I really liked that red 12” - going to have to go back and spin that and the LP. I remember they had a Stargazer connection as well who I really enjoy.

MARTIRE had me thinking of VOMITOR, so I've been going through their records the last couple of days. Perfect band. Blending Sodom's first mini-album and LP, Morbid Angel pre Altars and Metallica's Kill 'Em All. All with their very own attitude and style of playing. It's all vicious as hell, but damn if the latest album, Pestilent Death (Hells Headbangers), isn't their very best yet, together with the Neutron Hammer demo/EP.

I've also revisited the first AVULSION album, Dimensions Of Darkness, from 1997 (Death Gasm). The late 1990's was a dismal period for my type of death metal, so this record stands out. Recorded at least seven years too late, sort of. Close in sound and spirit to Derketa and the likes. Perfectly lifeless and unenergetic performance, as if it was recorded by four fish-nibbled floaters during a delayed death twitch. Brilliant album.

I saw Ceremonial Bloodbath play a house show last night. Talked to Graham a bit about noise (maybe he's also on here?).

The Montreal show was excellent. Definitely Graham and Anju's best overall band to date. I love Grave Infestation and their other projects are all worthy, too, but CB just kicks it up a notch. Anju's drumming has never been better, and Graham being able to focus solely on guitar instead of having to handle vocal duties seems great for him. Dave and Adam bring a lot into the fold, too. Those dual vocals are so sick.

Graham did (still does, on occasion, it seems), the noise project Worker. I released his split tape with The Rita some years back. Anju does The Nausea and has an LP forthcoming on Absurd Exposition and Buried in Slag and Debris.

It was a fresh turn to take after their super technical, spastic releases. Although the previous album, "The Furnaces of Palingenesia", already hinted towards a bit more "direct" approach – and it's a fucking killer release, too – the new one really straightens things up quite a bit. I understood that the basic tracks were laid down live, as a trio, which is quite impressive. Heh, the first time I listened to "The Long Defeat" I thought that this is the album Funeral Mist was supposed to make after "Hekatomb", as its follow-up "Deiform" felt almost like it was where the leftovers from "Hekatomb" were dumped. It's still better than the vast majority of 2021 BM releases I heard, of course.

Other than the aforementioned, I've been quite obsessed with the Wagner Ödegård's (of Wulkanaz fame) "...järtekn" albums during a couple of last years. Especially the third one, "Om kosmos och de tolv järtekn", really is something else.

Saw Mortiferum for the first time last night and was really blown away. I enjoyed the records fine, but seeing them play live really put their music into perspective for me and now I'm finding myself listening to it differently. Recommend catching their show if you can.

The new Archgoat EP is good. Starts out pure black metal and then starts to incorporate some death metal parts by the second track, but each song has its own unique sound. It's actually pretty diverse for Archgoat. Hadn't listened to them since The Luciferian Crown, so I have some catching up to do.

Heck yeah it's great. They were supposed to play here but the pandemic took it out I'm pretty sure. Hoping they get rebooked soon...

The artwork on that album always creeped me out way more than it should. Stirs up something similar to my childhood Shadowgate anxiety. I'm 34 and that game still gives me the creeps but I love it anyway.
