BEST LIVE BOOTLEGS

Post by D345 »

Care to share your favorite live bootlegs? Some best recordings of otherwise too clean sounding bands are out there somewhere on tapes and blogs. Genre doesn't matter. I love lo-fi live recordings with nothing edited out or "fixed." Don't care if it's unofficial or official record (like VENOMs OFFICIAL BOOTLEG) or if it has been released physically anywhere. Here's some favorites of mine:

Sielun Veljet - live at ilosaarirock 1983
https://youtu.be/5b7Uz2i__3Q

Sarcofago - nights in hell
https://youtu.be/cftoOiFG-yM

Beherit - live joensuu 1992
https://youtu.be/UcL7VIpcP2w

SWANS KALX-FM Radio April 12 1986 Live @ Mubuhay Gardens San Francisco
https://youtu.be/JCO0l7OXITo

Ministry 1996.06.29
https://youtu.be/Ka2wb8P4fm4

Velvet Underground - Live At The Gymnasium, New York City, April 20, 1967
https://youtu.be/pf6wmcqUjV4
and of course THE LEGENDARY GUITAR AMP TAPES

Coil - 25th July 2004 – Ocean Club, London, England
https://live-coil-archive.com/2004-2/2004-ocean/

X-TG - Live at Casa da Música - Porto, Portugal (2010-11-05)

and all the Laibach bootlegs https://archive.org/search.php?query=cr ... Laibach%22
But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

This clip of Black Flag playing 'Damaged 1' in Philidelphia, 1982. Heavy, man.

So many great Dead Kennedys gigs, one of the most documented punk bands of the era.

A recent favourite is one of their last shows. Someone keeps throwing beer cans at the band and eventually Jello dives off of stage to rough the guy up and extract him from the venue. D.H. Peligro somehow manages to instantly get out from behind the drum kit and dive into the crowd to back Jello up.

The Clash - 1980-03-08 - Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ, USA

Very much looking forward to Philip Best's book on the subject, whatever form it may take.

The video that got me into Godflesh. Still their best stuff imo (delay on the vocals really ramp up the bad vibes.)
My good friend and I actually bootleged this on Cassette about ten years ago when we were living together in Alberta.

I go through semi-regular periods where I listen to little else besides VU boots. The ones you mentioned are great (especially love "I'm Not A Young Man Anymore" off Gymnasium, the only recording of it that exists). Other faves include Sweet Sister Ray, Live '68/Problems In Urban Living, Black Banana/'66, Warlocks/Falling Spikes Nov '66, Hill Top Festival. Lots of good ones on this list too: https://www.discogs.com/lists/Boots-on- ... -VU/341085

since there seems to be love for Lou Reed:
https://youtu.be/7dQ3P8knPDw

“At one of our last shows, we were performing Lou’s heartbreakingly personal song “Junior Dad.” We had turned it into a spoken word piece and Lou recited the lyrics while we played an atmospheric drone underneath.
It was a beautiful night in Dresden, Germany. A few blocks away, a big fireworks show began right in the middle of the song. I was worried that it would distract Lou and annoy him. Instead, while gesturing towards them, Lou improvised a poem about the fireworks:

State of grace, Stars that never last forever, Stars that burn out, and disappear, The cheapest imitation of God, The cheapest imitation of God, A make believe sun, State of grace.

Then he returned to “Junior Dad” as the audience cheered and the band built up and rocked out with Lou ’til the end of the song. It was just amazing. We all looked at each other, knowing this was truly special. Many of the band and crew had“.

btw nowadays Metal Machine Music sounds like birds singing. Nothing wrong with that.
But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

On the roughly half a million Sisters of Mercy bootlegs in existence, this one is usually considered the best one among fans:

https://youtu.be/TMhFtq3iYC8

The band’s last full-lenght came out in 1990, and there haven’t been any new studio recordings of any kind since 1993, and yet they’ve never stopped touring and writing new songs. Some of their best songs haven’t had an official release at all, and are only available as bootlegs. Which is probably for the best since it’s by now a couple of decades too late, at least, for a fourth album.

And yeah, Peel Sessions aren’t technically bootlegs, but.

https://youtu.be/hJJM1Tm030Y

One of my favorites.

If you are, let’s say over 35, it’s almost certain your favorite band has done one too.

I really like the Germs Cat's Clause release, especially the very shambolic pseudo-cover of PIL's "Public Image".

I like the saturated, slightly queasy coloration the recording adds to the super-loose, jangly guitar lines immensely.

Prime Nico, right near the end. The live a cappella versions she does of All Tomorrows Parties are always perfect.
