Wasteland Jazz Ensemble have a new release coming out on Gilgongo 2xLP/DL
https://wastelandjazzunit.bandcamp.com/album/s-t
Wasteland Jazz Unit is a staple in the world of destroyed music. With countless releases cataloged by a literal who's who in the field, (cassettes, CDrs and records on American Tapes, Troniks, New Forces, Oxen, Torn Light, Nashazphone and of course - there was a split 7" w/ Tiger Hatchery on Gilgongo), the duo of Jon Lorenz and John Rich occasionally expand their scathing, feedback-saturated reed work into a full ensemble. Here, as a 7 piece group including Dylan Posa (guitar), Edward Ricart (bass), Matthew Reis (electronics), Ryan Jewell (percussion), and Brett Nagafuchi (percussion), there are textures and fractured forms throughout this high-volume chaos which calls to mind the work of Hijokaidan, as broadcast through Borbetomagus. A heavy and delightfully excruciating listen! 2xLP, gatefold with extensive liner notes by Inzane Johnny.

Re: FREE JAZZ ISN'T FREE
I'm more excited to hear that Wasteland Jazz Ensemble LP than I am about the sour cherry pie I bought today at the Hamilton Meat Pie Co on Burlington St.
I think there's a "regular" jazz thread and I've probably named off a few (fuck maybe I haven't, who knows what crazy shit I'll get up to) but for me Coltrane is the father, the son AND the holy ghost. I adore his works with Pharoah, his work when Alice was in the band, basically I can appreciate all eras but Ascension (both versions) and the works he produced around the same time are the epitome of free playing with a nod to actual spontaneous compositions and a band that actually listened and played off each other. His live albums Concert in Japan, Live at the Village Vanguard AGAIN, and Live in Seattle are the quintessential live recordings.
I have to put dinner in the oven. I'll follow up. Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Brotzmann, Braxton, Dixon, Wright, Graves, I got a lot to talk about. Plus newer stuff.

If you haven't hear this 2013 fucking SLAMMER of an LP you need to do so. It's insane to me that this LP can be picked up on discogs for $15. I don't always keep up with the newer bands but this is just the bees knees.

Here's some for the noisecore freaks, two collab releases Sedem Minut Strachu with Massola and Supraphon Family

Re: Jazz/subgenres
On an Ornette binge today - my favourites would be Free Jazz, the Golden Circle LPs and his classic Atlantic LPs but I have a soft spot for later records such as Ornette at 12, The Empty Foxhole, etc. I have never quite clicked with his live records with an orchestra or the Science Fiction/Skies of America era that I admittedly have not gone back to in a while.
I would like to pick up Crisis, Love Call and NY Is Now as well and give them a thorough dive. Seems the only way to pick these up is used or through that new box set that I simply cannot fathom paying $300 for 6 LPs.
I got a chance to see Ornette live a few years before he died, probably 2008-ish - it was a real treat. He played sax, trumpet and violin, did a great set and closed with Lonely Woman.
