Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
Grey Wolves - Chaos of Creation
Maurizio Bianchi - Endometrio
To Live and Shave in LA - The Wigmaker in 18th Century Williamsburg
Mauthausen Orchestra - Bloodyminded
Mo*te - Stash
Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma
Merzbow - Venereology
Whitehouse - Psychopathia Sexualis
Tunnel Canary - Jihad (OK so it's not totally noise but it's close enough for me)
Small Cruel Party - Accident in Substance
Swastika Kommando - Mental Answer
Alfarmania and Proiekt Hat - Furyfication
Solmania - Morphine Nocturne
Macronympha - Grind
Hijokaidan - King of Noise
K2 - Hepopolitika
Blodvite - Dekonstruktioner
Operation Cleansweep - Power Hungry
Incapacitants - Onomatopée Suicida
Oscillating Innards - Nadir Emergence
This list of course refers to albums that can reasonably be placed in one of the main noise noise genre codification categories (Noise, PE, death industrial, etc..) and not the noise preceding (like early industrial) or adjacent genres like no wave or noise punk or what have you. If that was the case, SPK would take up half the list. Metgumbnerbone would take up a quarter. Skullflower a quarter. You get the point.

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
A few years ago I started venturing down the road to do a double cassette reissue (with additional archival material not part of rundownsun's vinyl versions), but it never panned out for a couple reasons. Maybe there's still some potential to make it happen one day.SafetyPropaganda wrote: Mon Feb 21, 2022 7:18 pm Tunnel Canary - Jihad (OK so it's not totally noise but it's close enough for me)

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
The tour de force that is the War Against Society 3xLP. In particular how each act contributes a mini-album length of material! Incredible contributions from the Grey Wolves, Con-Dom, the obscure Victim Kennel, and more. I know I'm not the first one to have become a worshipper of this release or this label.
Ending on a strong note from Streicher. To clarify: this project has been influenced by both F.P. Yockey (see the insert) and Pure "No's Knife" (and by extension Crass Records era of spoken word punk). Who else can claim quite a lineage? That's just one reason why power electronics is simply the best genre, and Streicher's influence is hard to overstate.

This is not one that I have heard mentioned before. I love their full length, but was not too wowed by what I heard of an early tape. Is this more noise focused, or is it still centered around a long sample?

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
This is the album (more a "best of") where noise first clicked for me, prior to that I'd bought a cheap used vinyl copy of The Haters - In the Shade of Fire pretty much at random, and while I was intrigued, and listened to it quite a bit, it was more a novel curiosity at the time. Still, though, it was enough to pique my interest and investigate further, picked up a copy of Merzbow's Kibbutz tape on the recommendation of music store staff, though that wasn't to my liking at all, though it wasn't too long afterwards I happened upon a used CD copy of Phlegm Bag Spattered, which again was a fairly blind, random purchase, but it hit a lot differently than The Haters and Merzbow albums.
Anyway, a few others which are all time favorites, or at least get the most repeat play...
Masonna – Mademoiselle Anne Sanglante Ou Notre Nymphomanie Auréolé
Kazumoto Endo – While You Were Out
Merzbow - Music For Bondage Performance (There's a lot of late 80s through 90s Merzbow I like, which kind of makes it hard to narrow down to a small number of "all-time" favorites, MFBP though gets a lot of repeat play due to its restrained and well-crafted ambient vibe.)
Hijokaidan - Romance

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
Thanks! All I have heard of the early Black State material was just long samples with some minimal noise on top - not too inspiring. But if there is more pure noise and atmosphere in the other tapes, then I will need to take another look.Der.Bluteimer wrote: Wed Feb 23, 2022 10:48 am. . . Great faves ! Hearing that would be a delight. I own nothing by them and merely have fallen in love with them through the documentary and downloads on Soulseek. An amazing band. So ferocious. Snazzy dressers. A vibe.Scream & Writhe wrote: Tue Feb 22, 2022 5:15 pmA few years ago I started venturing down the road to do a double cassette reissue (with additional archival material not part of rundownsun's vinyl versions), but it never panned out for a couple reasons. Impossible to answer, but here is a small selection of really good shit that doesn't get old. Purposefully leaving out P.E. since the thread title specifies noise.
Secret Apex - S/T
Just too good, one of few releases that make the combination of noise and melodic content really work in my opinion.. Only other project that succeeds at this that I can think of right now is Noisestar and the Fall of Rome... Any suggestions?
Kakerlak - Crawling to Objectify
Pure bliss. Great packaging too.
Unclean - Civilian
That perfect gutter sound. Everything on TF/PE excels at this..
VMS Elit - Todesrennen
Gasoline! One of those projects where the theme helps it along. Always puts me in a good mood.
Worth - Blinder
Nothing sounds like the feedback mayhem of Worth! Total mastery. Endlessly surprising textures.

Alright, alright here are some favorites that come to mind off the top of my head. I could sit here forever and rattle off favorites, but held it to 30 that I really love a lot. Obviously these are personal faves and have nothing to do with what I think is the objective "best" noise releases.

dave phillips: post-homo sapiens
sickness: i have become the disease that made me
sissy spacek: california ax
anthology of experimental music from china (various artists)
-this one might blur the lines a little bit, but it's a record for noise people imho
zhu wenbo, anne-f jacques, chemiefaserwerk, bardo todol: floating tape [album series]
-actually four albums, each album features two of the artists as "input" one "mixing" with the fourth releasing it on their label. I think the artists are from Beijing, Canada, France and Argentina
nursewithwound: thunder perfect mind
-I'm not sure I get why noise people don't seem to ever cite nursewithwound. I mean, tell me that this and Soliloquiy to Lilith et al., aren't noise records. I was particularly baffled to find the noisextra folks mention at one point not ever really checking out nww despite being current93 fans. But I digress. Oh- they said there were too many surprises in his music. That's hilarious, but I don't mean to come off sounding offended.
The Cherry Point: Night of the Bloody Tapes
Christian Renou: Fragments & Articulations
Mike Shiflet: tetracosa

Re: Favorite noise releases of all time
lhd - in mono (troniks / helicopter, 2020)
the impossible balance between constant dynamics and constant relentlessness has been reached
dead body love - lo-fi power carnage (old europa, 1995)
every single shift aims toward maximal emotional impact. pure overdriven tape worship.
zk - isilo (lake shark harsh noise, 2018)
if the rita is a minimalist, the michael heizer or donald judd of the harsh noise game, zk is a postminimalist. building upon / tearing down the rita's formal lessons into something which keeps minimalism's coherence and consistency, while allowing in some micro-imprevisibility, letting the material breathe and make its own decisions
yan jun / zhu wenbo - twice (erstwhile, 2021)
though their work is very silent, this is more noise than noise itself. more organic, non-idiomatic, unexpected, really just sound as sound as sound and i'm here for it

Homotopy to Marie was a huge gateway record for me getting into noise. Interestingly enough I found it terrifying at the time (what was I, 13? Can't remember). I think the idea of putting that on a record was pretty overwhelming.ureaVJ wrote: Tue Jun 18, 2024 11:02 am nursewithwound: thunder perfect mind

Actually revisited this last weekend for inspiration. He's one of the coolest fuckers on this earth.
While I'm here I'll drop my top 5 also...
Hanatarash - The Hanatarashi and his Eye 7' (favorite ever)
C.C.C.C. - Test Tube Fantasy (goes for both the original 7' and the expanded edition on New Forces. Seriosuly, how blessed were we to get that?)
Prurient - Pleasure Ground
Les Rallizes Denudes - '77 Live (technically not noise, but... nah, it's noise)
Wolf Eyes - Dread

If I hadn't intentionally limited my selections to things I had physical copies of (other than Tetracosa, because they fon't exist) I would have included Yan Jun and Zhu Wenbo's tape on tsss tapes "Yu Yuan Lao Gong." I love those guys.

I didn't know anybody, and there was a funny smell.
NWW. First project to turn patently disturbed and disturbing disembodied faux innocent child voices into riffs.

The much later Surveillance Lounge registers like victory lap, or possibly Nurse doing Nurse. Even without the title. And the artwork.
