noise as soundtrack on films?

Post by D345 »

I have very rarely heard any noise (music) on movie soundtracks, do you know any examples?

Only ones that I can come up now are Texas Chainsaw Massacre (of course, one of the ground zeros anyway in noise) and Hole in my Heart by Lukas Moodysson (the movie includes a dude who listens to noise alone in his room, probably to highlight his alienated escapism)

feel free to point out even the obvious ones that I probably have forgotten about
But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

Tetsuo comes pretty close at least. Some kind of noisy, clangy, metallic industrial.

Mark Korven’s work on the Witch, Lighthouse etc. soundtracks isn’t exactly noise either, but is also something like it. This custom-made instrument of his will immediately seem familiar to many here, I bet:

EDIT:

Eraserhead for sure as well.

Clean, Shaven (Lodge Kerrigan, 1993) - Amazing "noise" score that sounds like something Patrick O'Neil might cook up under a Scar Crowe-esque alias. It's a shame that the standalone soundtrack is only available as a bonus feature on the Criterion release.

I was about to mention this one as well. A perfect score for what it is, really.

There’s a scene in Blow Out that’s sort of tape music-y:

Less the soundtrack as a whole, but Decoder (1984) is basically about a noise artist terrorizing Germans in McDonald's to start a revolution against the government or something. Lots of noise parts in the film.

Decoder is such a cute movie!

W (2022) by Anna Eriksson has industrial/ambient soundtrack. Anna Eriksson is the leading elitist in Finnish movie scene right now

I should rewatch Tetsuo

but is there any harsh noise in movies?

It's a short independent film, and not exactly cock-eviscerating harsh noise, but it it does fit with the theme:

Ville from Vapaakaupunki went to see it. He was the only person in the theater!

It seems there’s surprisingly little. But if you think about it, even movies about, say, metal or punk bands are ultimately pretty rare. And those genres are like a million times more mainstream.

I’d love to see a coming-of-age film about some young noise fan. Or maybe a TV series with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant as a struggling Power Electronics duo.

Somewhat related: in the rape/revenge film LIPSTICK (1976), the rapist is an aspiring avant-garde composer.

Lasse Marhaug has composed the score for several films, including two by director Amat Escalante, Heli (2013) and The Untamed (2016). Amat's brother is out-there saxophonist Martín Escalante, who has collaborated with Sissy Spacek, Otomo Yoshihide, Weasel Walter, and others.

Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has released a number of experimental and 20th century classical albums, as well as collaborated with SUNN O))), Throbbing Gristle, and others.

There's a Namanax track on the Gummo soundtrack, isn't there?

There once was a prominent, long-running cable television show that reached out about licensing a The Cherry Point track for inclusion in an episode but, ultimately, they went with a metal band instead.

There are a number of filmmakers, music supervisors, actors, and beyond - independent, experimental, and mainstream Hollywood - who I've seen at shows or shopping through the experimental music section at the local record store and some who've bought discs from Troniks. I'm kinda surprised we haven't heard some Merzbow or Prurient yet in a prominent release.

Not "pure noise" but a little harsher than your average Goblin soundtrack:

Cabaret Voltaire - Johnny Yesno (never seen the movie, and not my favourite CV either but here we are)

Chu Ishikawa – Tetsuo OST - some noisy elements happening here

John Carpenter - Lost Themes Remixed (not a real movie!! But all our friends are on it)

Forbidden Planet - it's basically a noise record?

Ennio Morricone – Crime And Dissonance 2xCD (Mike Patton sequenced this, it's not noise but there's some really fucking weird shit on here - excellent comp!)

Having just posted elsewhere about Brian Ruryk, he notes in the interview I linked that he contributes to the soundtrack for Nick Zedd's seminal War is Menstrual Envy (with Annie Sprinkle and Kembra Pfahler!).

Haha. It’s been half a lifetime since I’ve seen this movie. I recall Absu and Mystifier being in there. I wouldn’t have recognized any particular noise artists or tracks at the time anyway. But yes, I looked it up and you’re right.

S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, etc) has ordered from S&W a few times!

John Hurt's character in Jerzy Skolimowski's The Shout is an electronic composer and in one scene he's yelling into a tape-reverb-drenched microphone.

This piece on the soundtrack to Pusher 3 is basically a noise loop, used very effectively in the film to show mounting pressure and mental decline:

Also relevant is the howard shore soundtrack to videodrome!

“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” - This japanese movie is all about noise, pandemia and the end of the world. Masaya Nakahara, from violent onsen gueixa acts there.

“into the Void”, directed by Gaspar Noé, has noise from Zbignew Karkowski

Oh! I can't belive I forgot about this! Such a peculiar movie. Enjoyable, though. I need to watch it again some time.
