OUT NOW - Kevin Novak of T.E.F.
Kevin Novak is a master of cut up harsh noise hailing from Texas, USA. Active since the late 90s, he has worked closely with labels such as Hospital Productions, Pitch Phase, and Dada Drumming, the latter of which has released his most recent masterful albums Framework and Wrought. Kevin joined me to talk about what he does, how, and even a bit of the "why?," touching on his history, recording and gear techniques, and even his other creative outlet, painting. T.E.F. is a personal favorite project of mine, so this interview meant a lot to me.
https://youtu.be/k4uvv1BXJM8
In the Patreon exclusive EXT. video, Kevin goes into details about digital streaming, talks about his former label, making special handmade packaging, and reissues. Kevin has also graciously shared the audio file from his T.E.F release "Machination Of A Corner", released as a bizcard in 2002 on PACrec. Also, for those watching living, I’m giving away a copy of T.E.F. / A FAIL ASSOCIATION 7” (White Centipede Noise, 2019) with inverted colorway from the regular edition, riso printed by Tommy Carlsson. Edition 1 / 6 (the other 5 were packaged with the insane test pressing Texas flag edition) There will be a Patreon post as soon as the episode ends visible to all Heavy Sponsor / Noise Fiend Patreon supporters, and the first person to comment on the post wins this special 7".

This episode is a treat.
The unlocked Love Rosenström interview is very much worth the time, not to mention the 3 hour Afterblast with Andy Bolus.
Really stellar episodes lately! Nice work, Oskar.

The 2 winning essays, describing the solitary noise experience, are now published in a public post on Patreon. They each won a Harbinger Sound LP, their choice of RJF or TRERIKSRÖSET!
I've also started working on a 2-3 (possibly more!) CD compilation representing the first 2 years of WCN Podcast, pairing new material from artists who have been guests with audio from their interview. Final lineup will be announced on October 18, but it's shaping up to be epic already, as you can imagine if you look at who has been a guest so far. This release will only be available to Patreon supporters, and it will only go into production once the Patreon reaches 300 members. 300 personalized copies for each supporter will be available. You can secure your copy and make sure it goes into production as quickly as possible by signing up and supporting today.

I a curious abut the noise evolution you were talking about in relation to your interview with the Irish guy when you were equating noise evolution to pizza and liking it one... I'm going to have to go back and scrub through the episode and listen to it again.

Re: WHITE CENTIPEDE NOISE PODCAST
You, know, this has gotten me thinking that maybe my conclusion that higher education/self-education might actually be what it takes for HN to expand its palette (assuming that matters to you).
I often joke about my conclusion that I had to look seriously at a professional career in sound design, audio engineering, foley, recording technology, etc. just to be able to "make noise for a living". But I also think an important side benefit is that it opens up a lot more options for expanding the pallette of HN, both in terms of better access to specialized equipment and a technical knowledge of how to use it. That being said, without a real focus, it also becomes too easy to wind up so far afield that you find you're not even doing pure noise anymore, or at least not particularly HARSHSHIT. And you might end up turning into Trent Reznor, or a secreted, Willy Wonka-esque studio rat spending endless hours tweaking different reverb impulse responses on your Eventide Hal9000 without actually recording anything (I personally think that sounds like fun, but...)
Anyway, bring on the "acoustic grinders"! I definitely think a lot is possible given the right person/people that can put their minds to developing these machines, but for now we might have to settle for learning a little more about mics, preamps, placement and making use of edited/collaged recordings. Granular synthesis can do some cool stuff towards the goal of creating, say, a wall of noise out of a series of recordings of splintering wood. But it comes with its own set of limitations and can also sound kind of lame. I mostly like it for shifting randomly across large chunks of longer recordings, but a lot of people seem to only be interested in using granular for making drone clouds and trebly, mincing ca. 2000 "laptop noise" effects.

Re: WHITE CENTIPEDE NOISE PODCAST
There should be a topic here dealing with the names dropped in each episode. That's something the listeners/viewers could/should participate in. Some kind soul has already made a discogs list of all the top fives. Speaking of those, I didn't get the North Carolina album title Steve Underwood mentioned, any help appreciated.
Re: WHITE CENTIPEDE NOISE PODCAST
And about the future development of harsh noise, it's like Oskar said, as long as the sound sources get the same FX pedal treatment, it will all sound pretty much the same. Which I don't mind one bit, I think it should be acknowledged that there is a "traditional"/"classic" harsh noise sound, and usually that's what I want to hear. Kinda the same with f.e. hardcore punk, I know what I like about it and I don't really want any surprises from it.
Thing is, many people making/listening to harsh noise are after that high feedback-heavy low rumbles-mid-area crunch combination, and nowadays people will get that result without having to experiment. If you want to make something new in the realm of harsh noise, you really should step out of the box & experiment with different sources, recording methods, and so on.
