Punk/Hardcore

Post by chryptusrecords »

we're all basically just punks right? i'm sure we can share some good recommendations on this stuff. personally my favorite era of punk music is early 80s uk anarcho scene, right before d-beat and crust become solid styles.

somehow everywhere you look in this scene you can find boundary-pushing, just fucking weirdo shit, absolute ripping hardcore, unique and detailed artwork, and perhaps best of all strong conviction in their beliefs ;)

anyway post your favorite punk etc. here!

Basically, we're all punks ... being in the 60+ bracket my era was the late 1970's ... the documentaries and films I have seen very rarely capture what it was really like. Not for a 'hick from the sticks' anyway ...
this film comes quite close ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n3Do5xko0A

I still love punk but have felt totally disconnected from the scene for the last 5 years or so. Disconnected or alienated, I don't know. I don't really care about what comes out anymore because it all feels like it'll be forgotten in two months and it's been years I haven't heard bands like No Hope For The Kids, Herätys, Career Suicide, Destino Final, etc that churned out instant modern classic releases.

I still play in a hardcore band and don't intend to stop anytime soon though.

I like all the Finnish, Swedish, Japanese, UK, Italian and US stuff that we all know are untouchable classics but I’ve been really coming around on stuff I did not care for much in the 90’s. I was into Union of Uranus, Drift, In/Humanity, Rorschach, Acme, Systral, His Hero is Gone, Born Against etc, but I’ve been getting into more emo tinged stuff like Mohinder, Heroin, Anomie and I’m particular Unwound and Moss Icon. Trying to find more of this stuff but I’m real picky. I didn’t jive with Fugazi and I only got a little into Rites of Spring.

I’m also huge into current bands like Una Bèstia Incontrolable, Sial and Barcelona. Iron Lung puts out a ton of shit I really like like Diat, Roht….

Finally, someone made this thread!!! I didn't wanna do it, because I've already made two or three "official genre threads" as it is. Anyhow, here's some of what rocks my boat...

Peace Test
(Providence, RI - ripping hardcore punk on To Live a Lie)

https://peacetest.bandcamp.com

The Impalers

(TX hardcore punk, some of the best I've heard in awhile. Band might be RIP??)

https://theimpalers.bandcamp.com/album/ ... dweller-lp

Massgrav

(Swedish d-beat, fastest I've heard in the genre)

https://everydayhate.bandcamp.com/album ... -stureplan
https://everydayhate.bandcamp.com/album ... eat-eaters

Spastic Amoebas

(Absolute weirdness from Doug [ex-Hellnation, Brody's Militia, Praparation-H], Matt Lindsay [ex-Sockeye, Breathilizor, etc], Matt Weiland [ex-Rupture, etc], and I think people from Finland and Sweden...)

https://backwoodsbutcher.bandcamp.com

(Doug runs that label - check out all of the stuff on there, there are loads of different genres and it's all quality)

They have some music videos, mostly NSFW. This is their latest, I haven't watched it yet because it probably has flashing images.

Sounds like you should look into the Gravity Records and San Diego scene from the early 90's then. Have you heard Drive Like Jehu? Because if not, do yourself that immense flavour. It might blow your mind forever. And then check out Hot Snakes because they're the best band in the universe and have John Reis and Rick Froberg from DLJ playing Wipers-inspired punk rock, just super angular, infused with that noise sound, and super catchy. You can start by the last album, which was the best comeback album ever.

Coincidentally, you may also want to go back to Canadian bands from the 90's and check out Shotmaker or Okara if you haven't yet. There are tons of amazing older emo bands or releases like that. I did sell most of mine many years ago only kept a few classics llike the Portraits Of Past LP, the Assfactor 4 7"es and Lps, I may still have the first two Yaphet Kotto LPs somewhere, I loved the Don Martin 3 LP and their 3-way split 7", etc...

And regarding the Barcelona scene, living super close to Spain and attending plenty of punk gigs in the Southern Basque Country, I think I can say there were good bands there but after Destino Final and Belgrado put them back on the map (in the 80's they had killer bands there, like HHH, GRB, Subterranean Kids, etc), any band from Barcelona could record something and put it out on LVEUM, and that led to a surprising amount of bad releases from there, in my humble opinion. Actually, and it is sad, but whenever something new comes from Barcelona, there's 90% of chances we take it as a joke or with contempt here.

Very cool! Certainly long overdue. I am blessed to own a copy of the lp that I picked up in high school. A really powerful and (at least when I was introduced to them) mostly unknown record.

I can't say I still listen to much of the stuff mentioned in the last few posts (Gravity recs, Shotmaker, YK, 'proper' emo of the 1990's etcetcetc) but the OEGP and Union of Uranus material is really hall of fame stuff that still flips my wig when I listen to it.

I knew the name DLJ but I doubt I’ve ever heard them before today but I really dig the second LP that’s on Tidal, been driving around for work all day listening to it. Thanks for the heads up. I know of Gravity from Heroin, Earthless and they released IMO the best MITB LP but haven’t done a deep dive. Lots of stuff to check out from this thread.

I’ve seen Shotmaker a few times and Okara sounds familiar as well.

As for the Barcelona stuff I was in Budapest a few years back and checked out a random local show with Suicidas (???) and I was chatting with the drummer who also plays in Barcelona and he couldn’t believe anyone actually liked that band. I haven’t done a huge deep dive but I do like the stuff I listed off - Belgrado are pretty cool too, I picked up a couple LPs a few years ago.

Speaking of Canadian stuff...Ire, great doom-y metalcore* from Montreal. The vocalist was one of the founders of Hotel2Tango with Efrim of GYBE along with some other people, also their later stuff has one of Converge's former drummers playing on it.

*When I say metalcore, I don't mean the glut of "emo" ish At The Gates clones of the mid 00's

shameful self promo, I play guitar in this band and some vocals here and there. terveet kädet/siege worship. We are all punks down here
But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

I love this tape, Demo Buena Onda by Ignorantes. The fidelity, particularly on the guitar, is completely insane.

Got the new 7” from Paranoid - probably IMO the most consistent current hardcore band out there. I really fucking love the vibe they put out.

Great to see this band mentioned here. Was lucky to catch them here in Montreal a couple of years back.

Timekiller Raw Punk / Crust / Hardcore

Shows at our venue have pretty much been on hold for the last 2 years but a few years ago we put on a show for these guys. They are based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam though non of the members are originally from there. I still regularly play this 7" which I picked up at the show.

Haemers Hardcore

Belgium's punk and hardcore scene have always been really active but lately some new names have been popping up and playing a lot of shows both in Belgium and here in the Netherlands. Haemers is one of those bands and among my favourites.

Gagged Hardcore / Powerviolence

Another band from the Belgian scene, Ghent to be precise. A short lived band but I love this demo tape by them. The vocallist Jenci also has a noise project called Et Dure.

I'll stop for now as I could go on for a while. Enjoy!

Saw them and The Rites in a basement back in 2003 or 2004. Didn't get into them at the time, but now I love them. I feel really dumb for that.

And hardcore/punk is my main passion really even still. Grew up with it, been about it for... over 20 years now? Shit, probably 25 years. Played in a few bands through the years, these are my two current bands:
