I know that Tim/Haasiophis went to art school and it definitely shows in how they present that band in a unique and interesting way. Totally brilliant stuff in my opinion. He also does vocals in another more out there project called LARVAL (which may be coming out on Bent Window in the near future...)
I love the majority of Antediluvian's work and the new album is especially great. Here's hoping they tour. I think Tim might also be the person behind Sect Pig, no? Good Von worship.

Woof...
I was thinking like a week ago about Vassafor and if I should bother scanning for copies of that latest release. Sure as fuck glad I didn't bother.

I prefer slam when it comes to extreme metal. Cerebral Incubation, Cephilotripsy, peelingflesh, .357 Homicide. Stuff like that.

woah i was just listening to Diocletian the other day. i've certainly enjoyed a bunch of black and death metal over the years but sometimes i like to indulge in metal thats less "true" and to me this doesnt really fit in the stoner/punk/grind threads

i think this album is so sick and legitimately extreme, kinda deathcore? tech death?

google says "mathcore" or "Metal" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i also Love deathrash/black death/south american thrash stuff like sarcofago, holocausto, mutilator

Profound Lore released the new Black Death Cult record called Diaspora and it's so good. Multiple real what-the-fuck moments. Check it out. Blackened caveman prog/death metal.

Picked up CERIMÔNIA - COMBUSTÃO CONFLAGRAÇÃO DESOLAÇÃO blindly and am glad I did! Brazilian war metal, just ridiculously brutal. Weird penis satan chariot on the tape cover, why not?

Ooooof didn’t realize this guy was in Diocletian too….. pretty weak. Haven’t really been following this stuff over the last few years and don’t really feel like I’m missing out on anything….

Metal is my longest running passion in life by now. When noise started to take up more of my time, metal took a step back, but I've always kept one eye on what's happening. Right now I'm very very eager to hear the new NEGATIVE PLANE album, The Pact. Their two previous albums, Stained Glass Revelations in particular, are to me some of the best black metal recorded on this side of the second milennium line. As are the two albums by the related project Funereal Presence. Phenomenal!

In my CD player today is the second CONCRETE WINDS album, Nerve Butcherer from last year. Insanely frantic death metal. Sounds and looks like Angelcorpse mashed up with Aborted Christchilde with a whiff of Nuclear Death: dissy wirldwind guitars, plenty of surprising backwards ideas. A sound that looks like a nest built by magpies on amphetamine. A fucking sore to both eyes and ears. And they have memorable tracks! A problem I have with alot of death metal today is the lack of that. There's plenty of bands with a superb sound and just the right production, esthetics and all of that, but where are the Maze of torments, the Ridden with diseases, the Skull full of maggotses, the Spawn of Azathothses, the Maggots in your coffins etc? You know, tracks you can hum in your sleep 30 years from now? Oh well... There are a few. I'll guess I'll shut it and be happy.

That Concrete Winds album is good.
Havent been following black or death metal scene in years but a friend of mine keep track and always hits me up when he finds something that I could be interested.

I've been having some of the same issues, I don't know if I've become jaded, or black metal has become worse? Probably the former. I really like the new Warloghe, though. Still, nothing that compares to the classics from a few years ago, the prime era of black metal for me, 2000s, early 2010's.

I think a little bit of both, although both are subjective opinions. I'm jaded and getting old. I know what I like too well so I won't give any attention to a release if its description uses certain words to qualify the music, or if the name sucks to my ears, or if its production is poor because it was recorded with an iPhone and not with a particular aesthetic in mind, etc. I'll always find excuses to not check out something new.

BUT 1/ A Crimson Evenfall discography CD just got released and vinyl pressings should come out "soon" as well. I've been waiting for that for years now. 2/ I visited the real Dimmuborgir today and it ruled.

What are some of those 2000's/early 2010's releases you find great, please? I'm eager to get new recommendations.

And Concrete Winds are great but I think I liked Vorum better.

And while we're talking death metal as well, I consider Slayer's "Hell Awaits" as a crucial proto-death metal album, and Nekromantheon from Norway released an incredible album called "Visions Of Trismegistos" last year that's an extreme version of it to my ears, like serious black-thrash metal that sounds old and brutal. It's quite perfect, actually.

Shit, there are so many, but I can mention a few that come to mind:

Katharsis. Haven't released a single bad track. You can tell even from their demos (most of which are collected under the Kommando Metal release) that they are gonna be something special. Really fucking nasty but masterfully produced at the same time. I think Kruzifixxion is probably my album of choice from them, but everything is great. VVorldVVthoutEnd is a masterpiece, but somewhat of an outlier in terms of the general Katharsis sound. This shit is too good. Those vocals! Black Lust! Klage is more in the melancholic vein, just really really beautiful riffing and perfect foggy production. There are of course a million of these one man Burzum-ish bands, but this one is the best in my opinion. No "suicidal" shit. It sounds.. triumphant but sad at the same time. Start with Dystopias Wiege or the split with Kargvint. Both of these bands made great contributions to the Tormenting Legends II compilation as well, which also features a track from the somewhat underrated band Furze. On later albums he went too far down the 70's rabbit hole but the early years were great. Necromanzee Cogent especially. Super strange, labyrinthian, almost venturing into doom territory but with a harsh black metal sound. Also I should mention the whole first wave of the Nidrosian scene, I think I have talked about them elsewhere on this forum, Kaosritual, Selvhat, Min Kniv, Black Majesty, Mare, and so on: All really special sounding. Newer Nidrossian albums don't have that magical sound unfortunately. One last band I would like to recommend is Teitanblood. Super fucking dense black/death shit. I remember being absolutely blown away when I heard Seven Chalices for the first time.

Edit: yes, Vorum is fucking great!

VORUM ended on an amazing note with Current Mouth, yes! Such a wild record. Their debut on the other hand is for me a fine example of the "great sound but forgettable songs" thing I ranted about here the other day. A shame they ended when things were getting great.

German band DROWNED is an old favorite. Revisited their Idola Specus album today. When it came out I was a bit underwhelmed. The Viscera Terrae MLP was so distinct and original sounding. And with Mors Dalos Ra on vocals, too, adding to the stern and precise air of the whole thing. Idola Specus came across as slightly anonymous next to it. But over the years it has grown, and that lack of distinction is gone. It's just different. A towering grey obelisk off sorts, its features not immediately clear. You just have to brush and blow off the grey dust, so to speak, wipe your monocle and peer closely.

Katharsis !!! Had to throw on 666 ... I play the later stuff less often but maybe that's a mistake.

Just taking a look at the Sombre catalogue, it's crazy how many of those releases from the early 00s have aged incredibly well and are now considered classics. Some of my most frequently listened black metal records aside from the 2nd wave classic stuff, including the GOAT, Moonblood - Blut & Krieg.

I've also been listening to a decent amount of Abigor recently ... they never really resonated with me when I was younger but after the drama surrounding the Channeling the Quintessence Of Satan reissue last year I've been replaying the catalogue quite frequently and a lot of it is really great

Abigor is crazy good, and same! When I was younger I thought it was only ok. Hollenzwang is so raw and direct. I need to snag a few of those reissues.

if you like VENENUM and that ilk of projects you should check out REVERSED (members of AUROCH, MITOCHONDRION, SPELL)

Pick it up the cassette here:

(didn't want to put this in the new releases as it's not noise...?)
