Have not been that interested in death, black or black/death etc in long time.
Last week I was talking with friend that black/death band Flame is coming to our town.

That got me re-checking: Flame, Urn, Evil Angel, Archgoat, Beherit, Blasphemy and so on. Just a surface scratch

Plutonian Khaos - Encounter CASSETTE

Encounter is the second EP by the young slovakian project Plutonian Khaos, delivering a Raw Atmospheric Black Metal, which reminds me of projects such as Darkspace. EP recorded under mysterious circumstances, and released digitally in December 2022. Cassette includes the bonus track: Death in Infinite Loop.

Professionally duplicated transparent dark blue cassette with sticker on the shell, professionally printed double sided j card, comes in a single clear case. Limited to 50 copies.

Gespenst - Spectral Purple Winds I - II CASSETTE

Gespenst is a newly formed project by Lord Beltz, which is part of projects such as Dz'itnup and Sajkil, all projects are part of the Aeternae Plaguis Orda et Terram Tenebrae circle. Gespenst does a magnificent work of mixing Dungeon Synth / Keller Synth with different elements of Raw Black Metal, at the times playing pretty epic, majestic and melancholic soundscapes, and other times delivering a pretty lo-fi and at times noisy sounds, while it may read as a bad combination, this time Lord Beltz manages to blend everything perfectly, achiving to create one of the best, if not the best Dungeon Synth / Keller Synth albums to ever come out of Mexico. This tape includes Spectral Purple Winds Part I released in september 2022 by mexican label Burial Rites, and the Spectral Purple Winds Part II which is now streaming in the official APOTT Bandcamp. “¡Los males de nuestra tierra yacen en este tiempo, y somos parte de el!”.

Professionally duplicated solid pale purple cassette with sticker on the shell, professionally printed double sided j card, comes in a single clear case. Limited to 50 copies.

I sorta feel this but also I'm pretty picky with black metal. Then again I'm rediscovering a lot of stuff I ignored (Summoning) and loving it. Personally I like the weirder occult experimental stuff the most. But there's been some good stuff thats more straight forward lately that's been just a good old blast beats and shrill, fast riffs.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who doesen't agree with this. Same for death metal, thrash... hardcore variants x, y and z... blues rock.........hnw!

Too much of all of it making it past the self-released demo/promo stage.

I find my time less and less occupied with seeking out new death metal releases these days. The current state of death metal feels like a particularly tired rebranding exercise composed of either hardcore hands not entirely ready to give up playing hardcore, or the final vestiges of that first "new wave of old school death metal" (hard to say how many there have been at this point) that never evolved past the trappings of dayglo Seagrave-like album art with poor swedish death metal inspired musical underpinnings.

I really would love to see death metal morph back into a more primitive, thrashier, and more... well... "metal" framework, but I guess now that Mortician has become the meme band of the week, we're going to see a deterioration in the genre again much like what happened in the 90's (saying this as a fan of Mortician, no one gave them the time of day for years).

That said I've been revisiting that last Adversarial record a ton lately upon recommendation from a friend and surprised to find that I liked it much more than when it came out. I remember that first record being quite bad with the overbearing pornogrind blasts, but they seem to have found a more metered approach on that last one and I hope it's something they carry with them into the next LP.

I had a hand-me-down CD-R of Stronghold sitting in some CD wallet I dug out of my junk drawer and thought "what the hell why not try this out again?" and yep. Rules.

I really like this band - they opened for Antediluvian here.... shit at least a decade ago and it was fucking bananas. Blew everyone away! Antediluvian were still great but Adversarial were the surprise of the night. I love that one MLP with the Incantation cover on it. I recently re-listened to the first one and found it more balanced than I remembered. I seem to recall the snare pings were unlistenable but maybe my tastes have gotten worse... or better?

I've also seen them with a very good sound guy and also a very bad sound guy and the results are shockingly good when they're good and shockingly bad when the sound is bad - that's no slight on their ability, this is not music that does well with bad sound.

A little bird told me they have a new LP dropping soon and it's gonna crush skulls.

I haven't really been feeling a lot of current death/black metal lately - I have really just stopped paying attention to new bands! The last record to really excite me was the last Cerebral Rot LP.

Yeah, I remember that one. Solid show but I can't say I've ever been super keen on Antediluvian (they were good that night, but have one or two songs each record that aren't bad and then veer off into some very confusing directions that I feel don't suit them well).

The first Adversarial LP suffers from the same issues, and it's not helped by the overbearing nonstop blasts, the second album I thought solved a lot of the mixing and songwriting issues with the first one and was better for it. Glad to hear they have a new one dropping soon though, I was going to ask Mike what they've been up to when I saw him a little while back but it slipped my mind.

Speaking of Adversarial - that Azothyst record that Carlos did with Pete Mestre was very good as well - got around to listening to it far too late but it hasn't left my speakers all summer.

100% super insane EP/short album/whatever. Need more from them for sure.

Spent the whole weekend binging Slayer - they were so huge for me at different parts of my teens, twenties, and slightly less in my thirties. Now in my forties it all came back and holy fuck I know this band can be kind of goofy personality wise but man there are so many sick fucking riffs happening here on every record from their classic era. I bumped the entire 21 tracks on Decade of Aggression driving around for work today as well.

Slayer are kind of like classic rock AOR Pink Floyd or Zeppelin, as in I have heard them so many goddamn times and listened to every record a billion times but sometimes it comes back so fresh and juicy and those riffs just hit just right.

An eternal favourite since the moment I first started listening to metal. One of those bands where you've known every record* like the back of your hand for decades and they still bring the walls of the apartment (the office, the car, the hall) down whenever you put them on.

*Up to and including "Seasons..." on a good day.

Finally getting into the new Undergang - the "new" one from 2021 or so. I think somehow during the pandemic I just lost my mojo for contemporary death metal and stopped paying attention to new artists aside from like, Fetid, Cerebral Rot plus buying reissues of the classics.... I don't know why I shelved this but it's so tight. Extremely bass heavy, I felt like my house was shaking. Super solid.

I see they also just released a split with Spectral Voice so that's pretty cool....

Just saw Profanatica, Panzerfaust, and Son ov Leviathan a few nights back---Profanatica are AMAZING live. Bass-heavy black metal is always great, especially (I now realize) in the live setting.

Spent the week binging on Sepultura, Beneath The Remains might be such a high note in the Brazilian thrash catalogue. It's always been high up on my list of classics from that era but somehow right now it's just number one with a bullet.

I also love the Mutilator "Immortal Force" LP as well. I spent a long time only being interested in the rawest south american thrash and I still love that stuff (Insulter, Necrofago, Mortuorio, Necrobutcher, Masacre, Genocidio, Nuctemon, etc) but I'm just so here for these riffs right now. I'm sure by the end of the week I'll be back on the Cogumelo classics as well.

New Tomb Mold FUCKS hard. Reminiscent of "Human" era Death with some Atheist touches. Wow. Yes. Really solid and the bass playing fucking slaps.

New Blood Incantation single also fucking rips! One DM tune and one synth piece. Gotta get that 12"!!!!!!

I haven't checked the new album, but the two tracks they played from it in the middle of the set on Friday really shifted the mood of the whole room.
