Figured we could use one of these here, I know we’ve got at least a couple cinephiles among the numbers. Let us know what you’re watching right now, have enjoyed recently, or any current/past favorites you’d like to discuss.

Ivan’s Childhood (1962)

Clocked in at around 350 movies watched last year. Been taking a bit of a breather this past week or so, but that's mostly due to being tied up with year-end bookkeeping.

I'm definitely all over the place when it comes to what I watch as a whole, but I will often go through extended genre or director deep dives. Most recent dives have included French crime films (50s-70s) and the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder. I'm trying to get better at writing about film as well and will be contributing to the Film-Field section in the next issue of the Untitled zine.

Most recent (re)watch was Paul Schrader's The Card Counter, which might be his best film of this century (or at least on par with First Reformed).

A few weeks ago I watched and really loved a newer French film called Titane by director Julia Ducournau.
Would appeal to most fans of J.G. Ballard and David Cronenberg. Lots of body-horror sex and violence and twisted shit but there's still a lot of sweetness to it.
I haven't yet seen her previous film, Raw, but it's on the "to-watch" list.

I haven’t seen Titane yet, but it’s at the top of my “to watch” list!
I’ve been on a huge fantasy kick lately and just watched The Spine of Night. I don’t like too many animated films but it was definitely entertaining and had a great atmosphere

I really want to watch The Card Counter. I love all of his that I’ve seen, and First Reformed is one of my favorites of any film from the last decade

This one ties in with a lot of his previous films. Apparently there are even shot-for-shot recreations of some scenes, and of course here has Oscar Isaac assuming the same role that can be traced back to Willem Dafoe in Light Sleeper and even DeNiro in Taxi Driver.

The main thing that struck me was how much the music reminded me of Light Sleeper, then to see in the credits that the score for CC was composed by the son of the guy who did the LS score.

I have a huge backlog of movies to catch up on, but thankfully I also have a huge backlog of work to catch up on which I'll be compelled to finish while I plow through this backlog. Most recently I've been enjoying Titane, The Night House, C'mon C'mon, and the new Sean Baker movie was entertaining in a very "watching a pile up on the side of the highway" sort of way (spoiler alert).

Currently watching movies from spanish director Alejandro Amenábar, mainly my favs which are Tesis (interesting note Ramirez have one project of the same name, based on the film), Abre los Ojos and Mientras Dure la Guerra but also watching others that I never cared to check out like Los Otros. Really good director, all their movies are good, highly recommended.

His movies have been in my watchlist for some time. I might try watch Abres los Ojos / Open Your Eyes and Tesis / Thesis this week. I'm fairly certain I saw The Others like 15 years ago.

Going to love this thread!

Started really trying to watch every Criterion Collection title with a spine # in March 2021. When I started I had 75 under my belt. I'm currently on 189. Not watching them in order just trying to take them all in. I am good with watching them any way and own about 50 Criterion on physical format. What are some of everybody's favorite Criterions?

Just watched Dark Waters (1994?) and was shocked that I hadn't heard of it until now. Really great atmosphere, fantastic score (imo) and just a general unease during the whole thing.

Titane is fantastic. Watched it in a cinema and the reactions of some of the people in the room where a great addition to the experience.

Most of what I've been watching lately has been MCU and other recent comic book stuff. Used to read a lot of that stuff as a kid. Additionally, I've really been getting into old biker movies (The Wild Angels), just plain weird stuff (Rubber), and now I have a list of obscure sci-fi that I'm meaning to check out. Some of the old biker movies and obscure sci-fi can be hard to find streaming sometimes. It was pretty difficult to find the original version of Suspiria (Tubi.tv and a horror streaming service were the only ones carrying it in the US for awhile) and I am SO GLAD I watched that... what an incredible work of art!!!!!!

Btw it would be awesome if Phil Blankenship and Chris Bickel (Anakrid, Guyana Punch Line, In/Humanity, also has produced and directed some films) posted here - they'd be great people to discuss film with!!!

but, after reading both "lexicon devil: the fast times and short life of darby crash" and "spray paint the walls: the story of black flag," i figured it was time to remedy that.

I usually dodge Netflix as much as possible, but I'm currently really enjoying Archives 81 - being a sucker for obsolete media tropes mixed with conspiracy theories (in the vein of novels such as Flicker and Throat Sprockets).
Recently understood it was directed by the same duo who made Resolution and The Endless.

Planning to spend this Friday watching Kier-La Janisse documentary on folk horror Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched.

I recently saw Peacock King (1988) co-directed by Ngai Choi Lam who made Riki-Oh. It's less exploitative, but the practical effects are incredible and it's just all around a trippy rollercoaster - Ghostbusters meet Hong Kong black magick.

Also rewatched State of Grace (1990) for Gary Oldman superb performance in his full-blown alcoholism heyday. Impossible to not see the final shootout scene as a homage to John Woo's bullet ballet.

I liked Titane a lot, but I have some friends who disliked it. The structure of the film is perhaps slightly unusual, more like a descent than an ascent, which is probably why some thought it got boring after thirty minutes. I don't agree with that though. Raw is also great. Looking forward to what she does next.

I've heard that. There's hidden merit in Dylan's 80s output, I could see it working.

Been going through the MCU too right now. I saw them all in theaters through the year but showing them to my son. Right now we are on Civil War.
Obscure sci-fi, definitely check out La Jetée. One of my favorites - has so much impact in a small package.

Nice, definitely interested in giving this a spin, hadn't heard of it before.

I've had this on my watch-list since it won the Palme d'Or but still haven't gotten around to it yet. The visuals I've seen from it look pretty stylized though, seems cool.

Earlier in the week I watched The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) which I liked a lot and am planning to follow it up with another of his, The Exterminating Angel (1962)

i have yet to see the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie but the exterminating angel was a great watch, to be honest i've loved every buñuel film i've seen.
