Great to see someone appreciating this stuff! Or at least listening to it :) If you're not familiar with other stuff Mick Harris was busy with around the same time I can recommend some that IMO sound somewhat similar to this Matera album. Scorn is probably his best known "alias" and the mid/late '90s albums are not that far from this. I personally like the material with NJ Bullen most but up to Zander pretty much everything was great. Quoit was Mick Harris's drum'n'bass project and the 1996 album Lounge is good stuff if a bit more hectic than Matera. His 1998 collaboration with Eraldo Bernocchi (Total Station) is kind of dreamy rhythmic stuff not far from Matera in my ears. Together those two also collaborated with Bill Laswell to release two Equations Of Eternity albums (in 1996 and 1998), again somewhat similar but with Laswell's strong dub bass presence.

Been taking my most recent listening times to catch up on records I never got around to listening to upon initial purchase. A variety of sounds, all top notch:

Kyle Flanagan - Nightmare (Small Mercies)
Shredded Nerve - Existence of God (Small Mercies)
Shredded Nerve - Willed Into Existence (Station Fourteen)
Nyodene D - Edenfall (Malignant Records)
Max Julian Eastman - Model of Manhood (Tribe Tapes)
Death Agonies/Piss Horn - Split (Survivalist)
New Device - Recovery (Gods of Tundra)
DJ Speedsick - Electromagnetic Chauvinism (Fusty)
Sunken Cheek - Without Rejection (Angst)
Ryan Bloomer - Bully Hiss (Phage Tapes)

The good thing about a record addiction is you will never run out of things to listen to... ha... haha.

Laibach - Sketches of the Red Districts
Laibach - Love is still alive
Umpio - Insektio
Ames Sanglantes - "Karma" demo tape
Merzbow - Flesh Metal Orgasm
But he was always more concerned with making his guitar sound like a dying horse, more than anything else.

Unsane “Scattered, Smothered, and Covered” - drove up into and under downtown this afternoon listening this both ways. Heavy, slow motion thrash/blues from a dead New York City. I saw them one time in Lyon France in ‘98 and my friend turned to me and said “this is angry boys music! I like it!” I might agree except that my wife, very much not a boy nor angry (except when I tell her I bought a new record), LOVES the Unsane. 🤷🏻

German Army “Funai” - weird worlds of beats, synths or guitars or tapes and lo-fi ambience, slowed or deeply effected vocals. Kinda poppy/not-poppy industrial music.

Knurl “July 7/01” - Hell Yeah! Like a Freight Train crashing blistered frequencies through my house against rip-roaring distortion tearing apart the air and house tumbling down feedback rumble drone attack as the train just keeps plowing through. Fuck yeah, Train!! Lots of movement, never static, but not fast, giving time for really absorbing and enjoying the destruction of sounds. Bonus points for an awesome cover, I rlly dig the cover art.

Pholde “To Favor The Occurrence” - this is what I put on at night cuz it’s relaxing to me until my wife wakes me up asking me to turn it off cuz it’s disturbing underground night noise & it’s fucking with her sleep. Close-up metal sounds in claustrophobically dark tunnels with side rooms full of breaking down furnace pipes… creepy. Sorry, honey.
Another rad cover too from Paul van Trigt, who at this point is like the Pushead or Winston Smith or Raymond Pettibon of noise rekkid covers. I love his art, follow him on instagram, just don’t get enough of his work; in fact he does covers for one of my bands.

(Full disclosure, I’ve not been paid to write these last two thoughts of listen in review style for Absurd Exposition (who also recently released a CD by my band) but Taylor- hit me up & I’ll give you my paypal address 😉)

Just arrived in the mail, Subhumans CDs!! Alright!!

Striations “Collection 2”
This is best listened to whilst driving. Modern Noise/PE, I guess is what the kids wld say to call it, IDk, noise and synth noise and effects throb sounds noise and loops of tapes looping and people talking and live recordings of everything afore et en plus metal and screeching, distortions blasting furnace gnarl and feedbacks. Most of the subject matter revolves around automobile death bad feelings, & the sounds vibe within that theme. Mike’s been at it for a lil while now, coming outta Oakland; works(worked?) various forms of human waste/mess clean-up (death scenes, car accidents, garbage tenant/renter or hoarder clean-up, etc) for a day job. Burly life, burly sounds. I listen to this fairly frequently.

Today was a whole bunch of God Is War releases via bandcamp app (my rekkids, etc just got packed up yesterday/today for the next 4-6months)
King of the Arabs / Whatever Exists
Quit Sleeping On Me
Cruelest To Our Own II
Plucking The Sun Out Of The Sky

Good powerful vibe zones God Is War. I only recently came around to GIW (I have legit reasons). This is right up my alley: Heavy modular synth noise beats dub zone noise bad-assery. Elements of Scorn, Coil, Muslimgauze and more come at me. Looking forward to checking GIW out live soon.

Jute - Contempt c30-ish (Detachment Programs)

Bought this after the WCN interview and very happy to have found the artist. I was intrigued by his knowledge and education with audio engineering. He applies it in a different way than you would expect though. Tape saturation, feedback-ridden, old-school crunch through a well-focused and attentive lens. No elitist academia to be found here. You can tell he is a fan of the early 90's masters and nails that sound while not sounding like a copycat in any sense. Very well-detailed layering and editing.

Looking forward to discovering more from Jute!
