Underrated and under hyped projects

Brian is one of the nicest guys in the scene and while that’s great and everything he also just happens to back it up with some of the most insane creative and mind bending cutup style harsh noise I’ve ever heard. If you haven’t checked his project out I HIGHLY recommend you do so ASAP. Personal favorites are his tape on Aberrant Recordings (also a label worth checking out if you haven’t already) and his split with Maltreatment (both sides absolutely slay).

Tom doesn’t exactly get no recognition or anything, but I think this album flew under the radar for a lot of people. When was the last time you actually heard a PE album that made you feel bad and ashamed, like listening to Taint for the first time? Burned Carpet, Stained Sheets 100% hit that mark for me.

Not to say that he doesn’t have any following or is a super low key project, but I’ve often thought that his stuff would probably blow a lot of minds if more people heard it. While always remaining very much it’s own thing his sound straddles harsh noise, grind, noisecore and death metal aesthetics in ways that would certainly appeal to a far wider audience than just maniac noise heads.

I’m a huge fan of the Still Image tape that came out on Monorail Trespassing, Without. Only one other release ever came out of that project to my knowledge, which I haven’t heard, but Without is one I keep going back to. Very patient and intense at times, but hard to put a finger on.

MASON - his latest release on Deathbed Tapes is a true gem of cut-up harsh noise.
UBOA is not "pure" harsh noise, but her cut-up tracks are killer.

one of the all time bests! i don’t know if i would consider them underrated, on top for decades, but maybe not talked about so much since the project is barely active for the last decade

Strom.ec are a personal favourite of mine, love Stromstad as well.

Sometimes it’s hard to discern if older acts are underrated or just less talked about because they’re less active (Anenzephalia, and I’ll throw in Ke/ Hil too who were amazing)

MNEM never seemed to get the notice I felt they deserved and I think Mlehst has done some absolutely incredible work over the years he’s been active that isn’t regarded as much as it should be (Tonight’s the Night from 1996 is forever in my top five releases)

Happy to see MO*TE getting more recognition from younger audiences.

I definitely agree on Mnem not getting the recognition it/they deserve. Elyktrion, the latest album, has been rightfully celebrated though, and I’m very happy for that.

It’s not that he’s unknown to most, because he isn’t. He’s certainly a name, but UMPIO deserves much more play, praise and discussion than I imagine he’s getting. Always inventive, going his own way, skilled like few others. And the last few years have seen his very best works yet; Molesterol, Trankilo, Kulotus and more. Fans of Worth, which are plenty, could and should definitely appreciate Umpio as well, as they share alot of sonic qualities.

Two names that come to mind for me are South Korean artists Hong Chulki and Choi Joon Yong. Both have been active for many years but seem to reside outside of the traditional noise “scene” in many ways, seemingly appreciated more by people into high brow sound art and improv, despite them producing some raw and caustic noise. I picked up a recent Burntable tape, which is a collaborative project between Chulki, Joon Yong, and some others, and it’s fantastic, unhinged wild noise. Another excellent offering is the “Burn Yoido Burn” 3” CDr by Joon Yong. I saw Chulki and Joon Yong perform live as Astronoise a few years back when in Korea and it still stands as one of the best live performances I’ve witnessed. Utilizing only a turntable, car seat, a couple pedals, and a contact mic, they managed to create one fucking hell of a racket…noise in its purest form without a doubt.

Grabbed a Burntable cassette off the back of a Nystrand review on Facebook and didn't regret it. I've a lot of time for Turntable noise and it very much delivered. Very much appreciate Chulki's ability to tear it up loudly despite what is an obvious footing in more sparse free improvisation. Makes total sense he has a tape on Hanson.

On the subject of turntable noise and under rated artists, how about some love for Parallax chief Katsura Mouri? The Busratch disc I've got is fantastic but her solo CD M16 from 2017 is an absolute fucking gem. LOUD and ripping and simple but endlessly playable. She occasionally posts little videos of turntable experiments she's working on and her exploration of those devices as noise making instruments is surely among the most dedicated I've ever seen. Caught her live in London during Multiple Tap and her solo set remains one of the finest, most simple and spot on I've witnessed to date.

@adult human : I was there too for multiple tap, and admit Mouri's set was magical.

we have some great noisers too in France, which are mostly unknown out of the borders, such as MORGANE DESBEET, WILLIAM NURDIN, PAUL GREMARE, MOINEAU ECARLATE, ...
I have in mind starting a "sub label" for promoting outsiders only, mainly French, on beautifull digipack in association with a sound engineer for mastering and so on.
for now, it's a project. I hope this will be possible in the near future.

Not exactly under hyped, but I always thought 666 Volt Battery Noise deserved more shine. Really dense, hard-hitting harsh noise. RIP.

I'll echo that Umpio is another artist whose approach is incredibly inventive and deserves heaps of praise. His work is hard to pigeonhole, but I think that makes any new release more rewarding.

Another one that comes to mind is T.E.F. Those releases are so highly technical and precise that I feel like I'm getting whiplash trying to grasp what's going on.

Was really blown away by his "Sähkömusiikkia" double tape as KARTIO, out on Satatuhatta. Really impressive and varied stuff! Some "classic" electroacoustic moves and also noisier passages. Apparently he has been tampering more and more with modulars etc recently, moving away a bit from the junk percussion.

I think it's possible that some people are turned off by the more playful aspects of Umpio, in the album titles and whatnot. Not serious enough for purists. Jokes on them because the material is of utmost purity.

I've said it a million times already but Kulotus was probably my favourite CD from last year and it really made me see the project under a different light. Master skills. CD coming later this year on Absurd Exposition.
