Developer started in 2010 after the dissolution of Yes,Collapse and a bunch of other local legend type projects in Ohio. Intended as a musique concrete project in the spirit of Pierre Schaeffer but quickly called "brutal cut up noise" by people eager to youth-ify the audio. In fact eager to attach anything whatsoever to the music that kept it from being elevated or studied as "classical". Self-oppressing little shits we are we called it hippie, stoned, punk, metal. Whatever. Keep it away from the academy.

It is important to remember the true intent of this project when beginning to view historically. If it was groudfault would be a "level II". The audio can speak for itself but It falls apart originally for an hour and eventually settles on something like redemption. NO RENT is proud to present this transformative long form work. The Developer album. A vulnerable masterpiece.

-- FRIENDS

----------------
As personal and dysfunctional as the title claims, Developers newest release on No Rent suggests more of the creator’s process than what sounds are contained on the release. The title brings to mind finding your friend crying in the toy aisle of a local store for no reason that never gets a hint explanation. This unfound jarring weight, to me, is about what Reis was conjuring to put sound to tape on a personal journey. The wash that is placed over the painted canvas. The journey is partially what you would know (that there is an issue being expressed) and the unexpected (where you are led to). Much like the title the release is a merger of complex multi-layered loops clash with a conglomeration of sounds, unexpected pauses and the thick and heavy churn that Developer can conjure on the best of their material. The tracks run the gambit of throwing you through electro-acoustic mess, blown out distortion, meditative loops into the arms of straight cut up sound. The album moves you but never leaves you the same way on each track. You expect something to continue as it began but it rarely does as Reis reached deeper in each track to push himself to find something…be it an answer to the questions he was asking himself, new sound territory, or just where the moment left him. If you listen hard enough you'll get the point and find yourself amongst your own underlying reasons. This is a release based in the real, dredged from complex issues and not manufactured to be seen but placed on display. Chris Goudreau (06/2022)
