Mayuko Hino - Lunisolar CD (Cold Spring, 2018)

Actually digging this more than Skinner's mention of her Mne-Mic – Gulf Stream album on the WCN podcast. I was preoccupied during the first track and need to revisit, but the second track is full of minimal, simple pleasures. Various unassuming doses of hiss, burr, rumble and “old computer sound”, as examples, appear to be the core, but it takes over a dozen minutes before they begin to occur in more than one or two layers of any selection at a time. The action picks up around the half-way point with a distinctive low end and some higher-end “outer space” oscillations entering the mix almost in unison. The latter sounds may lose me a bit, on a personal-taste level, as they might not fully gel with the earthly core of the material (the track is, in fact, titled Astral Travelling), though I am more than willing to hear how it sounds again after another go. I don’t know if I agree with the hype sticker’s comments of this being “unrelenting, piercing electronics” or “intense, ferocious”, but the sum of the base sounds are so wholly satisfying. It’s on Spotify in full, on the Cold Spring bandcamp as first-track only, and I also have a handful of copies in stock (they’ve been taking up shelf space for a while, what’s up!?).
