agathocles has made a split with pretty much every band imaginable, lol. i heard that they release pretty much everything they record no matter the quality. i can ; (and do) respect that but as a listener it is rather difficult to pick out the gems.

Honestly I won’t even typically buy an AGx record unless the split band is good. I 100% respect their commitment to the underground DIY noise(core) culture but that doth not always produce thee sick riffage.

I never fucked with AGx too much, but always liked The Peel Sessions.

Why not? any reason behind it? the massive discography is a turn off? I've read from some people that they won't give them a chance or try to listening anything new because they don't know where to start, and they rather pass haha. Thanks for the recommendation Taylor, I actually haven't listened to The Peel Sessions, did the other day and I really enjoyed it.

Same here what it comes to their splits. Theatric Symbolization of Life and Razor Sharp Daggers LP's are great and enough.

It's a lot to sift through, and when I was first getting into this stuff I wasn't able to take them too seriously. I'm perhaps a bit too particular in my tastes to want to put in the work and find what would appeal to me.

No need to be a professor of AG studies, just enjoy if you have found one or two that you like. I have tried many but I did not like the later ones (2000-2010, haven't heard anything after that) that much and many of the older ones have many of the old songs in another version (live, demo, recorded in some random studio on a tour, etc). Theatric Symbolisation Of Life and Black Clouds Determinate are great (with great bonus tracks on CD). I will eternally worship these but feel no need to keep up with what they are releasing.

I will also add on the Agathocles talk that I skipped their show for one reason or another when they came here (2015-ish?) and I really regret it now. I bet that would have been hella fun.

I also really love Canadian mincers Archagathus and would probably default to them 9/10 if I was in the mood to mince. Those records are super stupid and super good.

Razor Sharp Daggers LP is the only full-length you really "need", but they have some other good full-lengths.

The greatest thing about powerviolence is how it proves my longstanding suspicion that the ideal band lineup contains at least two bassists at any given time. This is not a slight against the guitar as both a source of melody and a noisemaking device, but I feel like too few people outside of this niche have learned from Swans' example and embraced the pure sonic head trauma of two bass guitars going apeshit at the same time. Such cowardice!

I've been looking into starting some kind of dual-bass noise/metal hybrid outfit for a while now but got sidetracked by the pandemic. I'd like to incorporate that sort of thing more into whatever I do next with my current project, hopefully in collaboration with some other folks naturally, but for the current record I've settled for my own abysmal playing as just another layer to the sound. Also using a fretless 5-string detuned to all hell, not so much for ostentatious jazzbo reasons as dissonant microtonal reasons.

I remember Seized (sold the split LP a long while back and having trouble buying it back) and I thought Burmese were like, stoner doom or some shit. I’ll check them and Pg. 99 out for sure.

Definitely would love to do a “two bass” thing, although last time I was jamming with a guy we had a fucking crazy hard time finding an hourly space with two bass amps and the project fizzled…. (“Two basses? No dummy, you have a guitar and a bass! That’s how ya play rock!!”)

Absolutely nothing original but very well done PV in the Crossed Out style from 2013 - was sorting through my tapes today and kind of forgot about them.

If we haven’t talked about Vile Intent I’m about to throw the LP on after this. Fuck that band was so good.
