David Lynch Cooks Quinoa (Lynch, 2007), The Return (Pasolini, 2024), Twin Peaks (international pilot) (Lynch, 1989)
Blue Velvet (Lynch, 1986)
I hadn’t seen this in so long it felt like a first time watch—something I wish I could make happen with Twin Peaks; experience the affecting fascination of that first season all over again. The music of Lynch/Badalamenti/Cruise (now all gone) is a massive part of what makes Twin Peaks entrancing, and Blue Velvet emotively soars any time “Mysteries of Love” is called up.
The significance of Oz is well defined, and there is a sense that Lynch granted a kind of immortality to many of the actors in his stable, extending beyond screen time—their characters and the world they inhabit evoke nostalgia for a fairy tale that they end up becoming part of. There is dark wickedness inherent within, but there is also love and light, and the world is all of that, forever.
