I somehow had it in my memory that this was an explosive romp of a time, but the pacing is so deliberate (at times bringing the first Eugenie to mind) and the whole thing so surreal—probably Franco’s most successful attempt at making a film that feels like a dream. Comes right to the edge of psychedelic territory, but stops short of succumbing to many tropes of that ilk so consistently that it’s essentially the antithesis of a “swingin’ 60s” film.
