When it was first released on pioneering industrial/noise imprint Broken
Flag in 1987, Never Say When only appeared on vinyl and cassette (the
latter with two extra tracks). Now, this cult compilation from label
artists and like-minded artists has finally landed on CD – with all ten
tracks from the tape version on show. It remains a fine and far-sighted
collection, with the assembled artists variously offering up unearthly
ambient (Ramleh, Cranioclast, Controlled Breathing), densely layered
collage type soundscapes (Uncommunity, Jonathan Briley), unsettling
noise experiments (Total, The Grey Wolves), field recordings heavy
proto-drone (Andrew Chalk) and sample and speech heavy oddities (Mauro
Teho Teardo, whose album-closing track sounds like a weirder Space/Chill
Out-era KLF production).
